It's a New Year

Posted 01-14-2009 at 10:31 PM by mams1559

Well, I finally have a long enough moment to breathe and sit and think and type ... in other words, blog

Well, the new year is upon us and so far so good, from my perspective anyway. One bout of strep throat (wife) and one cold/sore throat (son) but otherwise we're all in good health. Thanks be to God.

The new year always signals renewal -- renewed commitments to change or improve oneself and usually a renewed outlook on the future. We always wonder about what's in store for us in the coming year. I think it's only natural.

We've had a bit of renewal here at my home. We're over the raw emotions of losing my FIL and have begun to move forward. We still remember him every day, but it's not as painful and it's more about remembering the good times and happy memories. Knowing he's with his Lord and Saviour makes it easier as well.

We've done some home improvements. New dining room furniture, new (free) carpeting in the boy's room and a new tread mill (no excuses now, right folks!?!). It's like a refreshing new chapter of life is upon us.

I can't help but feel optimistic about the coming year. It seems we are reaching a light at the end of the tunnel with respect to our troubled finances. If all goes as planned, we should be free of credit card debt by March! That's all well and good because we've just finished making arrangements for our vacation this year as well (more on that another time). All our spare change was tossed into an empty water cooler bottle, and it really adds up over time.

Let me close by saying I am blessed. I know I am more fortunate than many others. I pray for them. But understand I have been where many find themselves now and trust me when I say it will get better. Looking back I can see how we've learned to live on less. No need for fancy name-brand items... generic is just as good. Family activities don't need to be a night out at the movies or trips to far-flung destinations. The important thing is spending time with the ones you love and making the most of every moment. Make smart choices, know that what really matters is true happiness, not the things money can buy. I know if it wasn't for my family, their love and encouragement, I wouldn't have made it this far. Indeed, God has blessed me. I thank him daily for what I have.

In closing, let me just say cherish those around you and focus on what truly matters. Here's to a better tomorrow. May God bless you and keep you.

I think you are a bit overly optimistic re the recovery, but I do think we are on the right track. It is tough when you see your retirement nest egg shrinking. I feel that I will make it OK, if for no other reason than my advanced age. Best wishes to you.
