Welcome To Case's Column

Let me say a big welcome to all of you for joining me here. I'm going to call these blog meetings Case's Column. I wanted to use "Corner", but that was already taken. Since 2008, it's been a real privilege to come on here and share some of my life with you, and it's a big world where we live.

In these blogs, I'll just speak whatever is on my mind, but we will be playing within the rules here. I may pick a particular topic, point out an event, or shoot the breeze. I'm a little bit of an essayist at times, so I'll just speak what's on my mind, and I might tell a story or two. Or, I might spew out an opinion or three. There will be some serious moments, some tender, some poignant, but there will also be those moments that you'll just bust out laughing. But, hopefully, everything will be in good fun here. And, of course, there's a place below for your comments and thoughts as we go along here. So feel free to join me for the ride -- I sure as heck hope I'm doing this right and not making any mistakes.

Thanks for taking your time in reading Case's Column. Hopefully, you'll enjoy being entertained by it as much as I've enjoyed putting these writings together. And thanks for the time you spend in City-Data.com, where it's great to be alive!

Regards,

Case's Vacation Preview: Coming Up Roses Again

That time is almost here again. In just a couple of weeks, the Casester will be hitting the road for another relaxing road trip. This go-around will find me heading for East Texas and the Piney Woods region once more. I'll plan to spend a little more time there than I did the last time around, but since I have a hankering to see some new things, I'm adding a new place I've never been to before.

I'll get to that addenda shortly. First off, I'll be making my way to Tyler, Texas, a city known for roses in The Rose Capital Of America. The way this winter's been going, that Rose Garden might be worth looking at after all, since unseasonably warm temperatures could cause an early bloom, but I'll see if they'll actually be open. There will be no shortage of places to eat in that great city. Here's a short list below:

Clear Springs Restaurant & Grill. I plan to make three visits there. Wonderful catfish, but I'm willing to try their steak. They have a great selection of seafood, chicken, and beef.

Posados Cafe. Yes, they have locations in Dallas, but this franchise actually began in Tyler, and they are such an institution in that city. Great enchiladas.

Sweet Sue's. Never been to this place, but it will be close to the hotel. It's just a place for home cooking, but this will be my place for breakfast each morning. I hope it's good. You'll be kept posted on this place right here. In any event, any place the locals love is worth trying at least once.

Ken's Pizza. Generally an Oklahoma favorite for generations, but they're still in South Tyler, and still located on South Broadway. I plan to get one to go and take it back to my hotel. Lately, that franchise appears to be on its last legs, so it could be the final time.

Rudy's Country Store And BBQ. Yes, another chain, but they do well in East Texas. It just seems like the perfect place to go in that part of the country when you're surrounded by tall pines. I'm leaning toward this, although I'm not ruling out Bodacious BBQ, which is a definite Tyler favorite.

Now, on to the other place of interest on this excursion. It's Nacogdoches, Texas. As much as I've traveled Texas, I have never been to this particular town. They're known as the "oldest town in Texas". The town dates way back some 10,000 years, when the community of Nevantin housed a tribe of Indian settlers. A Spanish mission was even built there later on. One place I will be spending ample time in will be their historic downtown district, and there will be numerous photo opportunities, what with the laid-out brick streets and the nine flags that fly atop Nacogdoches City Hall. In addition, I should expect to see some signs telling travelers the exact location for the future Interstate 69 to be built in the not-too-distant future (I'm still a Texas roads fanatic!).

It should be one fine trip when we get to this next month. Life will be coming up roses...........in a sea of green.
