Welcome To Case's Column

Let me say a big welcome to all of you for joining me here. I'm going to call these blog meetings Case's Column. I wanted to use "Corner", but that was already taken. Since 2008, it's been a real privilege to come on here and share some of my life with you, and it's a big world where we live.

In these blogs, I'll just speak whatever is on my mind, but we will be playing within the rules here. I may pick a particular topic, point out an event, or shoot the breeze. I'm a little bit of an essayist at times, so I'll just speak what's on my mind, and I might tell a story or two. Or, I might spew out an opinion or three. There will be some serious moments, some tender, some poignant, but there will also be those moments that you'll just bust out laughing. But, hopefully, everything will be in good fun here. And, of course, there's a place below for your comments and thoughts as we go along here. So feel free to join me for the ride -- I sure as heck hope I'm doing this right and not making any mistakes.

Thanks for taking your time in reading Case's Column. Hopefully, you'll enjoy being entertained by it as much as I've enjoyed putting these writings together. And thanks for the time you spend in City-Data.com, where it's great to be alive!

Regards,

More North Texas Winter Musings From The Casester

This winter season has become one where I'm actually going to be disappointed if it snows before spring. Really. I'm pulling for us to go the entire winter without a single snowflake in my hometown. Usually, my area gets one to two snow events each season. Tonight and tomorrow night, however, will offer the lowest lows, by far, for this entire winter. Lows are expected to be around 25 to 28.

Seems like the Abominable Snowman decided to shed his fur and move his butt to Miami. With the notable exception of Lubbock and everything north of it in the Texas Panhandle, the rest of my home state hasn't seen one snowflake this season. Not a one. And even Lubbock hasn't had any serious blizzard-type events like they sometimes do (December did see a pretty good amount), but they've recently gotten just their second snow of the season. And I don't have to tell you about Amarillo, do I? The rest of Texas just may well cut to spring now and forget about the rest of winter. Who cares what Punxsutawney Phil said last week, anyway? He's not my chief meteorologist. Regardless, I personally don't want to see any snow this winter. I'm not in the mood, okay?

Speaking of said alleged weathercaster, I heard one guy on TV actually hint at the idea of freezing rain or snow Sunday night into Monday. The way things have gone, I'm not buying it. Not now. Not with springlike temps near 60 for some portions of this week. And after a brief cold spell through Monday, the "heat wave" returns in earnest on Tuesday, with the expected high of 63 (subject to change, of course, but it will be in that neighborhood). I'd rather see rain and thunderstorms than snow, anyway, but preliminary forecasts are also calling for sunshine. And once upon a March 5, your favorite blogger will take to the road once again with another trip to East Texas. I'll get to that later on. For now, Mother Nature can't seem to make up her mind between winter or spring like I can't make up my mind between cheese and beef enchiladas, as this see-saw has been fun to watch.

Maybe that Abominable Snowdude will be picking up chicks on South Beach without inviting me.

It can't be winter in D/FW without at least an ice storm, in my opinion.

Don't forget that Midland has been one of the snow capitals of the Lower 48, along with Seattle and Denver. Buffalo, NY has been enjoying the last few months, I'm pretty sure.

Yeah, and I don't think Midland's had too much, either, shoe. They did, I think, have a brief snowstorm about a month or two ago, but that's all I recall them having. Completely forgot about that.

Update: Snow in West Texas and the Panhandle. Wichita Falls is expecting snow. Dallas? The NWS is now saying snow and sleet, but only 37 for a low. I'll believe that when I see it. I expect a mix with rain, but I don't expect frozen roads in the morning.

I think Midland had two to three big snowstorms in December/January. It was featured on The Weather Channel a few times, having had more snow than about any place east of the Rocky Mountain area. Of course, that was over a month ago--I'm sure things have changed since. It usually gets remnants of snowstorms from elsewhere in winter, sort of like Dallas.

Update: here's a story from a little over a month ago:

You are so right, shoe. I had totally forgotten that they had such a big event out there. I tend to think more of Lubbock than Midland, but it sure did happen. I have a second cousin who lives out there, and I do remember my mom telling me something about that on a recent visit. By contrast, Dallas has had basically nothing, and last night did not see anything significant happening (just a small rain and snow mix with very few flakes), which means we (those outside of West Texas) may go the entire season without any sizable snow event.

Yeah, that may be right about D/FW. My place got a small amount of rain last night.

It does look like Lubbock got three inches of snow yesterday, while Amarillo received a little less than two. Here are some pics of the Tech campus, by sneed1979 of Raiderpower.com:

Well, at least in Lubbock, they can have a normal winter and enjoy the snow. I'm just ready for spring. And speaking of which, guess what city is back in the 60s?

    You guessed it. Dallas.

    And Lubbock.
