Welcome To Case's Column

Let me say a big welcome to all of you for joining me here. I'm going to call these blog meetings Case's Column. I wanted to use "Corner", but that was already taken. Since 2008, it's been a real privilege to come on here and share some of my life with you, and it's a big world where we live.

In these blogs, I'll just speak whatever is on my mind, but we will be playing within the rules here. I may pick a particular topic, point out an event, or shoot the breeze. I'm a little bit of an essayist at times, so I'll just speak what's on my mind, and I might tell a story or two. Or, I might spew out an opinion or three. There will be some serious moments, some tender, some poignant, but there will also be those moments that you'll just bust out laughing. But, hopefully, everything will be in good fun here. And, of course, there's a place below for your comments and thoughts as we go along here. So feel free to join me for the ride -- I sure as heck hope I'm doing this right and not making any mistakes.

Thanks for taking your time in reading Case's Column. Hopefully, you'll enjoy being entertained by it as much as I've enjoyed putting these writings together. And thanks for the time you spend in City-Data.com, where it's great to be alive!

Regards,

It's Been Forty Years Since My Favorite Show First Aired

A couple posts ago, I harped on the sixties and what a great musical decade it was, but now, I'd like to veer into some "breaking" news about a favorite show of mine that made its debut in another decade. That decade would be the 1970s, and that TV show in question? That would be "Emergency!", which debuted on NBC as a series on January 22, 1972. The week before, a pilot movie aired on that same network, entitled "The Wedsworth-Townsend Act".

Hard to believe it's been forty ---- count 'em, 40 ---- years since this important undertaking graced our TV screens. Six seasons on NBC, followed by a year and a half of occasional two-hour episodes, and now the show lives forever in syndication and on DVD. It was one of the greatest series ever, but it also shed light on what was then a new phenomenon called the paramedic. A trained technician who worked for the fire department could go out in the field and administer immediate treatment for patients in need before they can get to the hospital. What a brilliant concept, and one that has gotten better and more efficient over time.

And who could forget the characters in that show? Randy Mantooth (John Gage), Kevin Tighe (Roy DeSoto), Bob Fuller (Dr Kelly Brackett), Julie London (Nurse Dixie McCall), and Bobby Troup (Dr Joe Early) headed up that cast for the series' entire run. And who could also forget Tim Donnelly's hilarious turn as Chet Kelly, the perfect foil for John Gage until, of course, he got his?

Forty years. Hard to believe it's been that long. But that show still makes for great TV watching. Especially, of course, when there's now nothing else to watch amid, oh, about 200 channels on cable.

To note, "Emergency!" survived while trying to compete against CBS-TV's "All In The Family" for its entire run. They never beat them, but they did beat everything ABC offered during that same time.
