Welcome To Case's Column

Let me say a big welcome to all of you for joining me here. I'm going to call these blog meetings Case's Column. I wanted to use "Corner", but that was already taken. Since 2008, it's been a real privilege to come on here and share some of my life with you, and it's a big world where we live.

In these blogs, I'll just speak whatever is on my mind, but we will be playing within the rules here. I may pick a particular topic, point out an event, or shoot the breeze. I'm a little bit of an essayist at times, so I'll just speak what's on my mind, and I might tell a story or two. Or, I might spew out an opinion or three. There will be some serious moments, some tender, some poignant, but there will also be those moments that you'll just bust out laughing. But, hopefully, everything will be in good fun here. And, of course, there's a place below for your comments and thoughts as we go along here. So feel free to join me for the ride -- I sure as heck hope I'm doing this right and not making any mistakes.

Thanks for taking your time in reading Case's Column. Hopefully, you'll enjoy being entertained by it as much as I've enjoyed putting these writings together. And thanks for the time you spend in City-Data.com, where it's great to be alive!

Regards,

It Was A History-Making Season In Houston

Posted 01-15-2012 at 04:11 PM by case44

After the Houston Texans saw their historic season end in Baltimore today, it did set the table for future NFL seasons to come. The 10-year-old franchise finally made it to the playoff dance this year, winning big at Reliant Stadium last weekend, and then losing in Baltimore, 20-13 to the Ravens.

Still, this is something. Head coach Gary Kubiak has plenty of things to be proud of in a season of quite a few firsts. The Texans had many key players injured at some point during the season, and their biggest accomplishment prior to making the playoffs was their very first seven-game winning streak back around midseason. Imagine if they did beat Baltimore...

Oh, well. No sense worrying about it now.

The key next year, of course, is keeping everybody healthy, and if they do, the Texans will be making a lot of noise throughout the league. And this writer can't wait. While Cowboys owner Jerry Jones is still trying to figure out how to get his players back to the Super Bowl (Let's face it: He's a failed general manager!), the Texans have a really good football man in Rick Smith as their GM, who has made sensational draft selections in recent years, including defensive end J J Watt, who has thrust himself into the spotlight during the playoffs. At least in Houston, they have an owner who won't get in the way of the things his football men were hired to do. If they get a contract extension, it will be well-deserved.

Expectations going into next year will be high, and although they still don't get a whole lot of respect now, they do have the attention of those at the networks who have seen what they are capable of doing. The Texans could be on their way to a dynasty if they would just stay healthy. And this historic season, their first in the playoffs, was just the beginning.

Bob McNair, I think, is one of the best owners out there. To go from nothing to the ninth-most valuable sports team in the world in that short of a time span is a huge accomplishment.

Jones ought to make himself head coach.

Jones ought to just learn from Bob McNair. They're buds.
