Welcome To Case's Column

Let me say a big welcome to all of you for joining me here. I'm going to call these blog meetings Case's Column. I wanted to use "Corner", but that was already taken. Since 2008, it's been a real privilege to come on here and share some of my life with you, and it's a big world where we live.

In these blogs, I'll just speak whatever is on my mind, but we will be playing within the rules here. I may pick a particular topic, point out an event, or shoot the breeze. I'm a little bit of an essayist at times, so I'll just speak what's on my mind, and I might tell a story or two. Or, I might spew out an opinion or three. There will be some serious moments, some tender, some poignant, but there will also be those moments that you'll just bust out laughing. But, hopefully, everything will be in good fun here. And, of course, there's a place below for your comments and thoughts as we go along here. So feel free to join me for the ride -- I sure as heck hope I'm doing this right and not making any mistakes.

Thanks for taking your time in reading Case's Column. Hopefully, you'll enjoy being entertained by it as much as I've enjoyed putting these writings together. And thanks for the time you spend in City-Data.com, where it's great to be alive!

Regards,

Scattershooting Again / And It's Time Once Again For Dick Clark

Posted 12-31-2011 at 12:50 PM by case44

Man, it's been a while since I've done this. Hope I remember how to do this. Looks like we need to get back on the scattershooting bike and take this rusted thing for a spin.

Ryan Seacrest may be the current host of "New Year's Rockin' Eve" on ABC-TV, but previous host Dick Clark is still around for the experience. And on this very fortnight while we all ring in yet another brand-new year, he is going to be present on our airwaves once more. The 82-year-old Clark is still kicking and still as tireless as ever while still trying to recover from a 2004 stroke which impaired his speech. While I firmly believe that his heyday is way behind him and that he should call it a career, the other part of me doesn't really want to see him go. Oh, he'll hang on for as long as he wants; don't get me wrong. He's been, for the most part, a great contributor to the entertainment world, both on TV and on radio, and for such a long, long time. It is Dick Clark who has had a front row seat to so many legendary happenings within the music industry and the changes that rolled with it. He has seen it all, folks. Add to that the many interviews he's had with so many singers and groups through the years, both through TV's "American Bandstand" and radio's "Rock, Roll, And Remember". And tonight?? He'll be on TV once more to do a 40-year tribute on "New Year's Rockin' Eve". It's fitting.

Thanks, Dick, for everything you've done in the field of broadcasting and bringing life and light to hit music for many listeners.

Lots of people didn't go the movies this past year, did they?

It should also be noted that I've got a couple of co-workers who will be in New York City's Times Square for the ball-dropping proceedings tonight. I just hope they stay safe; it can be a madhouse down there.

The Texas Longhorns basically had a happy ending to a football season where a number of young players needed playing time and got it. Coach Mack Brown will no doubt be hard at work going into spring workouts to make some decisions for this next season. National Signing Day is February 1, and preliminary rankings have the 'Horns at the top spot of all classes with commitments (a whopping seventeen four-star players committed and could sign when that time comes around).

Those younger players need to improve and get better to compete in a new Big 12 this coming fall, and that will include TCU and an ever-improving Baylor squad coming off its best year in the last twenty.

A resort-style apartment complex built by the Huffines Group in my area is getting so much buzz that phases two and three may be built at the same time this spring. Their clientele grew faster than anticipated, so now there is a waiting list for potential new residents.

I make a big deal out of it because it is the first transit-oriented development in my neck of the woods. And besides, they have tropical landscaping, which I like. Am I moving there?? Can't afford it, but it'd be quite nice.

Just my two cents on why corporate radio needs to just go away: When Clear Channel Radio has all but killed two of my favorite out-of-town stations in the course of the last two or three years, it's plain to see what the problem is with such conglomerates. They just don't really care about their listeners. They think they know what's best for the consumer, but no, they don't. KTRH-AM (740) in Houston and KVET-FM (98.1) in Austin have been completely messed with for no reason, and many loyal listeners have bolted. I dream about a day where someone can step in and make the concept of radio a local thing once again, and that said stations..........and others...........can experience a rebirth and renaissance in what's become a dying industry with so many leaving the field. Radio belongs to the people, and it should be local, with local people who actually relate to you and with you. It should also be a public service. It should be autonomous. It should not be of the cookie-cutter mold. It should be unique. That's what industry insiders are forgetting. Technology can be a good thing, but when you have outsiders with taped voiceovers serving as your main programming, there's a big issue with something like that, and it's damned troubling. The medium of radio is best in the car when you can't turn on a computer and streamline. You're in heavy traffic, and what happens when that traffic report isn't there for you?? Business has become bad in radio, folks. It's time for some radio reform.

Maybe disk jockeys and news professionals are better off at some small, 500-watt station spinning tunes and doing a lot of other things for listeners. It may be all these folks have left to give.

And now, once again, it's time for my Word Of The Day. Today's word is beginning. As of midnight following this writing, it will be the beginning of a New Year all over this Earth. It's beginning to look like spring in Texas, what with a sudden surge to 70 degrees today (even though spring won't be beginning for another two-plus months). It's also the beginning of a new outlook on things, as January 1 always brings such to our lives. It's also the beginning of the end of another blog post from your favorite blogger.

And there you are, folks. Happy New Year!
