Welcome To Case's Column
Let me say a big welcome to all of you for joining me here. I'm going to call these blog meetings Case's Column. I wanted to use "Corner", but that was already taken.
Since 2008, it's been a real privilege to come on here and share some of my life with you, and it's a big world where we live.
In these blogs, I'll just speak whatever is on my mind, but we will be playing within the rules here. I may pick a particular topic, point out an event, or shoot the breeze. I'm a little bit of an essayist at times, so I'll just speak what's on my mind, and I might tell a story or two. Or, I might spew out an opinion or three. There will be some serious moments, some tender, some poignant, but there will also be those moments that you'll just bust out laughing. But, hopefully, everything will be in good fun here. And, of course, there's a place below for your comments and thoughts as we go along here. So feel free to join me for the ride -- I sure as heck hope I'm doing this right and not making any mistakes.![Stick Out Tongue](https://pics3.city-data.com/forum/images/smilies/tongue.gif)
Thanks for taking your time in reading Case's Column. Hopefully, you'll enjoy being entertained by it as much as I've enjoyed putting these writings together. And thanks for the time you spend in City-Data.com, where it's great to be alive!
Regards,

Houston Baseball Seeing The Face Of Change
Posted 12-14-2011 at 07:38 PM by case44
The Houston Astros will spend just one more season in the National League, its fifty-first, before making their historic move to the American League in 2013. The franchise clearly has a lot of work to do in coming off their worst season ever. It had been time to change ownership after Drayton McLane did so much for this team for so long, and that included the Astros' first-ever trip to the World Series.
And said Fall Classic is where Houston would like to be again, but it will have to come under the auspices of new leadership. Jim Crane is on board as the new owner, and a fresh, new face is coming in as the new general manager. The GM's name is Jeff Luhnow, who had spent the last eight years with the St Louis Cardinals running their minor-league system. I'd say he had a lot of success: two world championships, five minor league championships, one NL pennant. From what I've seen of him so far, I believe Luhnow is just the right fit for what Houston wants to set out and accomplish. His specialty is analyzing and intense data gathering. My Astros will be seeing a lot of young players back from last year's squad, but Luhnow is going to try to add players to build on what is already there. One move that he's already made is a trade for shortstop Jed Lowrie from Boston, along with pitcher Kyle Weiland for reliever Mark Melancon.
Jed Lowrie. ... Remember that name.
He's expected to provide an upgrade at shortstop and has some pop in the bat. I like this guy already!
And I like Luhnow and how he wants to go about things. Look, if the Cardinals have gotten the players they got and achieved the success they've had, then this is the right guy for Houston's front office.
As I've said, lots of work still needs to be done to bring the Astros back to respectability, and it will require patience from all fans, including yours truly. I'm impressed with Jeff Luhnow as this club's twelfth general manager. So far, anyway. I'm convinced better days will be ahead, regardless of which league the Astros play in.

Jeff Luhnow was a good choice for your Astros, Case. I think you'll really like him, and I'm actually disappointed that he left St Louis. What you'll find is someone who has the ability to draft well, to find good players, and bring in the type of players best suited for the team. I predict he will become one of the greatest GMs in the game because of the innovation and what he brings to the table.

The Astros are making more progress than most prognosticators are saying, mal. Houston was expected to finish with 100 losses, but I'm convinced now that that's not going to happen. They've gotten off to a decent start, but they've been overshadowed by the surprising start by the Orioles.

And Luhnow's been pressing the right buttons, too. I think he'll be a great GM.
