The Long Road Home

This past Saturday I found myself alone and incredibly bored. It's not like I have a million friends, and the few I do have were busy. I tried to see what my sister was up to and quickly found she was in a bad mood and I would probably rather being in the death defying realm of the mall during the holiday season.
I began to drive around in my Jeep. I took a few pictures here and there and found myself driving towards home. I was not of driving age when I left there and the roads had changed quite a bit. I decided not to use my GPS ans see how I would do.
I just let the roads take me there and it was rather exciting. Even with things looking much different than they did from when I was a child it just held a feeling of nostalgia. I passed a restaurant I used to go to all the time when I was little.
I remember when I was about six or seven the elderly lady from across the street invited me to go to the zoo in DC with she and her sister and I was more than eager to go. On the way back, we ate there. I sat there next to my neighbor and across from her sister. My legs were crossed and I was swinging my feet. I accidentally kicked the sister in the shins. Not once. Not twice. Many times. I honestly didn't mean to and she yelled at me. I tried not to move my legs but even now as an adult, I can't keep them still.
My boyfriends just laughs at me. I guess it is kinda funny. I decided I would go there on my way back out of town. I turned down my childhood street and every thing looked different. It looked alternate universe different.
I saw this about eighteen years ago and a lot had changed for the much worse. As I drove down the street the street appeared wider and the yards smaller. There were lines on the street now, giving it two distinct lanes. I did not realize until just a minute ago that it probably not my mind playing tricks on me. They widened the road taking from the yards. There used to be a dead end and woods and creeks at the bottom but now there was a big apartment building down there. More traffic on the road, they needed to dedicate lanes.
As a child two cars could fit. The road also seemed more flat. I know there was a large hill starting at the top because my brother and I used to come down the hill in the snow on our sleds. It was a big hill.
The houses were run down and the one I grew up in looked terrible. All of the shrubbery, plants, and trees that my father planted were gone and yard had trash and leaves in it. The shudders were painted a different color.
I snapped a quick picture and headed on towards my elementary school. I sit here in the safety of his home right now and I laugh, because my brother and sister have forbade me to go back there.
Yea, I'm a grown up, but I am the baby. They know I get a wild hair and go on adventures. I don't tell them where I am going, so they wouldn't know if I was gone, or where to look for me if I came up...missing.
I sent a picture to my brother of the old house and called him a bit later. I got a little bit of gas and started to head home. The sun was lowering itself down for another good nights sleep.
I realized that I had forgotten to stop at that place to eat once I was about 15 miles out. I wanted to turn around but also didn't want to be there after dark. I figured if the place was still open it probably would be for quite a while.
The road to get there wasn't long, I imagine it only took 45 minutes to get there. It was the road home that was far. That road goes twenty two years into the past and I can only get there through heart and soul.....
