"My Realtor Can't Tell Me..."

Posted 11-03-2011 at 08:55 AM by VickiR

I often hear people say this..."My Realtor couldn't tell me that there was...an airport nearby, criminals living in the neighborhood, where the sex offenders live, etc., etc.

The TRUTH of this is that there ARE federal laws that dictate a FEW things that Realtors cannot discuss:

At the FEDERAL level there are seven classes:

• race
• color
• religion
• sex
• national origin
• familial status
• handicap

Some states have additional protected classes but NC just has those listed above.

Of course, each state has disclosure laws that dictate what MUST be disclosed and what SHOULD be disclosed, such as an airport within a certain distance and even a water treatment plant!

That maybe so, but, if a potential home owner will do some research on his/her own, they can find out those things.

GEOEARTH is a good download to see where things are located. You can get a map of the area, and 'engage' items so that they show schools and other points of interests.

Each Sherriff Department has an online site where you can find out about sexual predators in your neighborhood, and the surrounding area. The Federal Government has a website for that also.

You can go to the City in question, web site, (since most Cities have one now), and they will have a map, (usually) of points of interests and where everything is located.

You can peruse the yellow pages for that city, and see where things addresses are, then locate them on the map.

You can call or email local schools to see what services they have, or even Government Entities.

People need to do thier homework in finding out things they want to know, before buying thier new home.

They dont have to be dependent on you, the Realtor, unless it has something specific for the house.

    I wish you well...
