Welcome To Case's Column

Let me say a big welcome to all of you for joining me here. I'm going to call these blog meetings Case's Column. I wanted to use "Corner", but that was already taken. Since 2008, it's been a real privilege to come on here and share some of my life with you, and it's a big world where we live.

In these blogs, I'll just speak whatever is on my mind, but we will be playing within the rules here. I may pick a particular topic, point out an event, or shoot the breeze. I'm a little bit of an essayist at times, so I'll just speak what's on my mind, and I might tell a story or two. Or, I might spew out an opinion or three. There will be some serious moments, some tender, some poignant, but there will also be those moments that you'll just bust out laughing. But, hopefully, everything will be in good fun here. And, of course, there's a place below for your comments and thoughts as we go along here. So feel free to join me for the ride -- I sure as heck hope I'm doing this right and not making any mistakes.

Thanks for taking your time in reading Case's Column. Hopefully, you'll enjoy being entertained by it as much as I've enjoyed putting these writings together. And thanks for the time you spend in City-Data.com, where it's great to be alive!

Regards,

Memo To Selig: Leave Things As They Are

Posted 10-29-2011 at 09:09 AM by case44

Some brief thoughts right now on the Houston Astros and what may be a possible move to the American League. It's not a done deal yet, but I wish Major League Baseball and commissioner Bud Selig would reconsider this idea. Do we really have to have two 15-team leagues?

If that were the case, we'd have somebody playing interleague every day. The Astros are the team being considered for a possible move to (~gulp~) the American League in a plan to even out all of the divisions. If the nation's economy had not been as bad as it's been, I'd rather we talk about expanding and realigning the AL and leaving the National League like it is. It would have been great to have two 16-team leagues. I would have loved it.

This would have been a great set-up:

AL East: New York, Tampa Bay, Boston, Baltimore, Nashville (expansion)
AL Central: Cleveland, Kansas City, Minnesota, Detroit, Texas (where they should be), Chicago
AL West: Seattle, San Jose (relocated from Oakland), Las Vegas (expansion), Portland (relocated Toronto team), Los Angeles

NL: As is

Yes, this could have happened, as this was the kind of thing that was discussed about twenty years ago. Houston, meanwhile, must never be moved. It is a National League city and was one the first expansionists in that league. If someone must be moved, why not the Rockies or the Diamondbacks?? Either one would have made more sense, and the AL doesn't even have a team in the Mountain Time Zone. Plus, neither team has been around all that long and are not as established as the Astros, even though the D-Backs have a World Series title to their repertoire. While the Astros hopefully get this owner change finalized once and for all, there should be no hurry or pressure to change divisional alignments. I see nothing wrong with the current arrangement. And I would prefer seeing an all-Texas World Series, not an all-Texas ALCS. The Rangers and Astros might make things interesting if they were in the same league, but the rivalry would actually be better if they were to remain in different leagues.

Hey, Bud, do us all a favor. Leave things as they are. Pretty please?

I still think that baseball would get higher ratings if the AL did away with the DH. I guess that it's a non-starter with the MLBPA, but people can dream...

I agree on having either the D-Backs or Rockies move to the AL. I'd say Rockies, since the team doesn't have WS rings like the D-Backs. On the other hand, I was in Houston this past summer and the radio hosts were lamenting the lack of divisional rivalries. They mentioned St. Louis, but people in that city don't look at it as a rivalry, like what they have with the Cubs.

With divisional rivalries in the NL Central, they only have one that is legit, and that's with the Cardinals, considering the great playoff series they shared this past decade.
