Remember When
Music was more harmonious than discordant. Back in 40s there was no gangsta rap, no heavy metal, and no guitar slamming while dressed in gothic clothing.
To me, music really was music to my ears. I still recall songs such as: The Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy, Anchors Aweigh, Coming in on a Wing and a Prayer, Dance with a Dolly with a Hole in Her Stocking, Casey Would Waltz with a Strawberry Blonde, Lay that Pistol Down Babe, Mares Eat Oat and Lambs Eat Ivy, My Blue Heaven, My Heart Knows What the Wild Goose Knows, I Saw the Harbor Lights, Don't Fence Me In, Deep in the Heart of Texas, You're in the Army Now.
And I remember the beautiful voices of such singers as Nat King Cole, Frank Sinatra, Bing Crosby, and the Ink Brothers.
Such music today is considered by many as "square" -- but what happened to the word square? It's meaning has changed. It used to have a positive meaning such as a square meal, a square deal,or getting squared with somebody by paying off a debt or apologizing, or being a person who treats everyone fair and square.
Currently it has come to mean a person who is too dumb to get away with anything, a person who is not "hip," rather than a person who is honest about everything.
IMHO we need more squares -- people who do volunteer work and don't look for cash payment, people who are loyal, honest, trustworthy, and truthful, and we need more of the kind of squareness this country was founded on.
