For the past months I've been watching the politics

and I have to admit that I am completely flummoxed. I believe people have the capacity for good and evil, and it is our choices that lead us on the paths we travel. I also believe that we have a level of intelligence that helps us navigate the path.
What I've seen in recent months belies that philosophy. I've seen and read so many seemingly intelligent and good people making statements that are so blatantly counter-productive to their own and the public good that I am just weary.
I sympathize with the people that are out of work, that have lost their homes -- or are near that point, that want to go back in time when life was just a bowl of cherries. Still, sympathy only goes so far, and most of these people are capable, competent persons. Are they just so caught up in their own life's dramas that they cannot see that if they reached out to one another they could find a way to provide mutual support? Forget the politics, forget the dogma. Just reach out and see what is needed in the community.
Why do we need our leaders to tell us what needs to be done? In that time of milk and honey, we were telling them what needed to be done, and voting accordingly if they didn't do it. Now we sit and whine and hurl insults like children.
We've grown, but haven't we matured? Has community and compassion become passe?
I am pretty certain that most out of work workers have skills that are needed in their local community. I'm also certain that for every hungry person, or homeless person, there is room and food -- and hands and hearts that know how to cook, and make space. So, why don't we?
What are we waiting for? Every world religion calls for compassion, charity, and service. Maybe instead of fighting about our religions, we should practice them?
