Why not post your question in the PEOPLE SEARCH forum for better results and more feedback rather than the journaling blog.

I lived in New York all my life.I grew up in the small village of Elmsford NY. We lived about 1/2 mile from the village.Life was good, as I knew everyone there.I always thought we were poor when I was growing up!I remember my dad rented our house from the county, and the rent was only $29.00 a month. We had a big stone 2 story house with 5 bedrooms and a bathroom on the second floor. We had a third floor unfinished attic. On the main floor, was the hallway entrance to a utility room, and entrance to parlor, dining room, kitchen. we had a big front porch.Back then we used coal to heat the house and to use for hot water. We had several large gardens and Dad sub leased one of the other piece of land to neighbors down the road!We had chickens,Ducks and pigeons,a few dogs and if I remember right a cat.
As I look back now I don,t think we were so poor after all. I mean we had fresh eggs,we had fresh chicken. We had all kinds of fresh vegetables and Mom use to use mason jars to store them a long time. We all worked in the garden and I learned how to preserve the food as Mom showed me.I lost all those skills,as my generation grew away from gardens and bought from supermarkets all our food. You know the food that contains chemicals and growth hormones, and are grown on corporate farms! Anyway when I was 14 YEARS OLD WE HAD TO MOVE OUT BECAUS THE COUNTY SAID THEY WERE BUILDING A 4 LANE HIGHWAY TO THE tAPPANZEE BRIDGE AND OUR HOUSE AND PROPERTY WERE GOING TO BE GONE!That broke my heart.Yes I remember there was a field that we in the neighborhood played baseball, football and other games on, like kick the can ect. ect. So we moved and dad purchased our first home that he owned. It was not really in a nice neighborhood, as it was in an industrial area of Peekskill New York.I did get to make new friends. Our family life was deteriating as mom and dad were having very bad fights.Dad was hitting the bars and women ect.My brother Frank got into a lot of trouble and was sent to upstate.I always looked up to my big brother and it sadened me. Mom and Dad ended up divorced and mom didn,t have enough mony.I quit high school in the beginning of my twelfth year so as to help mom out . However at such a youn age I couldn,t get much money for work,so I joined the Navy and sent mom money every month plus the navy contributed a small amount if I remember right. It was 1961 when I went into the Navy and I got out in 1965. About year later I met my wife and we married(42 years now) We have raise 4 children together who now are adults. My life I find that it was difficult at best, but it turned out o.k. I mean I always worked after I got out of the Navy.(I obtained my Equivalency diploma while in the Service)I took 2 college courses for my own self esteem and obtained 6 college credits. I worked 14 years after the Navy in social security covered jobs and then in 1975 got a job with Penn Central Railroad, which then we went to Con-Rail, Then we became a commutter Railroad called Metro-North Commuter Railroad, which now is M.T.A. Metro North Commuter Railroad. I just retired this past January after 33 years working on the Railroad. I did a lot of different types of work in my days to support a family.I drove oil trucks, lumber yard truck deliveries, drove Propane trucks, worked in propane plant, worked in machine shops, worked in factories and warehouses, did plumbing, heating, oil burner work, worked on loading docks.worked in clerical jobs.I ended up with pretty good jobs and money in my last 10 years of railroad work.We own our home free and clear. I'm not wealthy but financially we are ok.My wife and I get a decent pension,so all those years paid off. I'm 67 now and am slowing down some and my wife is 60. Where we live is an expensive area just west of Danbury Connecticut in New York. I use to love New York but in recent years it's not for lower middle class like me. I mean high school taxes, cost of food and everything costs so much! Times have changed a whole lot since I was a child in that quant small village. The country has changed as well as the world, and not for the better! My younger sister is dead, my older brother is dying.
I don't like the winters, but my wife likes the change of seasons and wants to stay here. I keep thinking back to a happier simpler time of a boy and a small village. And so I remember this guy I use to work with and he always talked about how he loved Plattsburgh. So, here i am on the blogasphere for Plattsburgh wondering if I can recapture some memories of small village life! I love to fish and hopefully my wife and I will visit Plattsburgh and Lake Champlain this summer. So Plattsburgh I hope you are ready for me(this boy from a small village that can't forget!
