Welcome To Case's Column

Let me say a big welcome to all of you for joining me here. I'm going to call these blog meetings Case's Column. I wanted to use "Corner", but that was already taken. Since 2008, it's been a real privilege to come on here and share some of my life with you, and it's a big world where we live.

In these blogs, I'll just speak whatever is on my mind, but we will be playing within the rules here. I may pick a particular topic, point out an event, or shoot the breeze. I'm a little bit of an essayist at times, so I'll just speak what's on my mind, and I might tell a story or two. Or, I might spew out an opinion or three. There will be some serious moments, some tender, some poignant, but there will also be those moments that you'll just bust out laughing. But, hopefully, everything will be in good fun here. And, of course, there's a place below for your comments and thoughts as we go along here. So feel free to join me for the ride -- I sure as heck hope I'm doing this right and not making any mistakes.

Thanks for taking your time in reading Case's Column. Hopefully, you'll enjoy being entertained by it as much as I've enjoyed putting these writings together. And thanks for the time you spend in City-Data.com, where it's great to be alive!

Regards,

This, That, And The Other: More Q&A With Case

Previously, we have visited a little time where people have wondered about the whys about the poster that is........, well, me. There is always something about your favorite people that others want to know about. I'm sure you've had more questions that you were just dying to know the answer to, so here now are more tasty tidbits and inquiries from readers out there. In fact, I know you have; you were just afraid to ask.

Q: You always seem to have a positive and different perspective and insight on our forums. It's quite refreshing. What is your inspiration?

It's probably not as much a matter of inspiration as much as it is a want and a need to be more positive in an otherwise negative world. I guess, wherever I go, I try to fill a void where a good day or a smile is needed. Many folks are capable of providing light in a dark world; it's not like I'm the only one who does it. Sometimes, here and there, I might make a comment that some people disagree with. In most places, I just try to be in the right place at the right time. The chat thread on some of our forums is always a good place to hang out and say "hey". I just wish on the Music forums that our chat thread would become more active and that more people would take advantage, so I try hard to keep it going. But there's only so much one person can do. It's up to others to keep the fire burning.

Q: You say you're a Houston Astros fan, but you live in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. How did this allegiance come about?

In Major League Baseball, there are two leagues. One is the American League, the home of what is my actual hometown team, the Texas Rangers. In the past, I had gotten very disenchanted with a franchise that had never really won anything, and the Rangers had become that. I was just plain bored with them, having grown up in the Metroplex watching nothing but bad baseball. Now, granted, they are playing better now and are contending for a division title after making their first World Series appearance, which they lost.

Which brings me to the other league in the majors, the National League. It is the home of the Houston Astros, Texas' original major league entry and a franchise that had had more success, comparatively, than the Rangers. They were the first Texas team to reach the World Series, back in 2005, and having earned more Wild Card berths and more division titles than the Rangers. Plus, I love Southeast Texas so much that, if a job offer came along where I could live there, I would. I have been an Astros fan since 1992. They are in the midst of a major rebuilding project that may take a few years and are also trying to change owners. You could say that, because they are a Texas team, that I 'adopted' this team for the object of fandom.

Q: Why Country Gold on the "w/feeling" thread?

You'll see that on about 95 percent of my posts. I developed an appreciation for classic country music later in my life even though it was the first genre I was exposed to as a kid. I've also mentioned that, in recent years, that KVET's old Country Gold Show brought new meaning and new inspiration to this genre more than ever. Now, I love the stuff from that genre and have embraced it. With what I do know about it, I try to share as much as possible, but I always try to learn new things. Every now and then, you may catch me posting something else, and that's fine and dandy, but because of my passion for Country Gold, you can see that it overtakes me.

Q: You like barbecue, don't you?

Yes. It's a Texas thang and it just tastes dang good.

Q: Have you considered at any time in your life becoming a disk jockey?

As a matter of fact, I have. On City-Data, I'm living (well, kind of...) this fantasy of being your personal disk jockey. Why not? What's fun about the Music forums (and, to a degree, Other Topics) is that everyone has an opportunity to create something. At least, it's a lot of fun. And it'd be a lot of fun in the real world, too. That'd be a neat career if the right situation came along. Sadly, it seems that, more and more today, more people are being talked out of a career in radio. How absurd! There will always be a need for voiceovers and announcers despite changes in the industry and the perceptions within the business. You can't depend on a machine to do all the things you want for you all the time. Radio still takes people to make it work. Given the chance, I would love to do a gig. Maybe I'll play some Country Gold. Be sure to tune in!

Regarding one of the questions, things have since changed on "....w/feeling" thread in Music in recent days. Because of the time this was written, I wouldn't dare edit this now.
