Welcome To Case's Column

Let me say a big welcome to all of you for joining me here. I'm going to call these blog meetings Case's Column. I wanted to use "Corner", but that was already taken. Since 2008, it's been a real privilege to come on here and share some of my life with you, and it's a big world where we live.

In these blogs, I'll just speak whatever is on my mind, but we will be playing within the rules here. I may pick a particular topic, point out an event, or shoot the breeze. I'm a little bit of an essayist at times, so I'll just speak what's on my mind, and I might tell a story or two. Or, I might spew out an opinion or three. There will be some serious moments, some tender, some poignant, but there will also be those moments that you'll just bust out laughing. But, hopefully, everything will be in good fun here. And, of course, there's a place below for your comments and thoughts as we go along here. So feel free to join me for the ride -- I sure as heck hope I'm doing this right and not making any mistakes.

Thanks for taking your time in reading Case's Column. Hopefully, you'll enjoy being entertained by it as much as I've enjoyed putting these writings together. And thanks for the time you spend in City-Data.com, where it's great to be alive!

Regards,

One Year Later And Still Missing That Old Show

Posted 09-03-2011 at 11:10 AM by case44

With every Saturday that passes, I can't get that radio show out of my mind. One year after KVET Country Gold abruptly leaves the airwaves because of a disagreement over a really stupid idea, the void is still there, both in Austin and on my computer.

Every time I make posts on the Music forums, it's still on my mind. Heck, what I'm telling you right now would make a great country song. The longtime staple of KVET-FM (98.1), which, for over 20 years, provided listeners with familiar and rare classic country favorites from the '20s through the '80s and which ran for five hours each week, has been off the air for one year. For a five-year period, I pledged so much loyalty to that great Saturday morning show that played music from the all-time greats in country music. I was attached to that show for longer than that five-year period, but I did not have a computer in the abode until 2006. The show is a memory now, but in my humble opinion, it should still be playing on KVET no matter what demographic changes insiders say might have happened. It had been number one in the Saturday morning ratings and didn't need any format changes, but that's what the then-new program director, Joel Burke, had wanted. Longtime deejay and Country Gold host Tom Allen disagreed, so he and KVET abruptly parted ways. Even though Allen had already had his much-deserved sendoff when he retired from his midday gig in 2008, he agreed to stay on for the Saturday morning show. None of us were ready to see him leave so soon, and the way it did. After 31 years in Austin radio, Tom Allen has not had another job. Not yet, anyway. Somebody in Austin has got to want to play classic country one of these days, and he would fit the format perfectly given the opportunity, even if he does it just once a week at age 72.

Now, on Saturdays here at home, what happens? I can still soak in a sunrise from my window view, and I can still get on my computer and listen to other things. Going forward, Saturdays just won't be the same after having not been for one year. I know what y'all out there are thinking: Get over this and move on. I'll move on when I'm good and ready, but Saturdays should still be set aside for Country Gold. It was a great tradition that is nothing short of timeless. As a fan, I can just keep doing what fans always do: dream.
