Welcome To Case's Column

Let me say a big welcome to all of you for joining me here. I'm going to call these blog meetings Case's Column. I wanted to use "Corner", but that was already taken. Since 2008, it's been a real privilege to come on here and share some of my life with you, and it's a big world where we live.

In these blogs, I'll just speak whatever is on my mind, but we will be playing within the rules here. I may pick a particular topic, point out an event, or shoot the breeze. I'm a little bit of an essayist at times, so I'll just speak what's on my mind, and I might tell a story or two. Or, I might spew out an opinion or three. There will be some serious moments, some tender, some poignant, but there will also be those moments that you'll just bust out laughing. But, hopefully, everything will be in good fun here. And, of course, there's a place below for your comments and thoughts as we go along here. So feel free to join me for the ride -- I sure as heck hope I'm doing this right and not making any mistakes.

Thanks for taking your time in reading Case's Column. Hopefully, you'll enjoy being entertained by it as much as I've enjoyed putting these writings together. And thanks for the time you spend in City-Data.com, where it's great to be alive!

Regards,

Big 12 Thoughts And Longhorn Nuggets

So, it's appearing that Texas A&M will be leaving the Big 12 sometime in the next few years, but you already knew that. Who should join the Big 12? You've heard all the rumors, the movers, the shakers, and the predictors strutting their stuff as they speculate. My take? It should be a team that already has joined the Mountain West Conference.

That's right. Boise State. This school would have been perfect for the Big 12 Conference had it just waited another year while Nebraska and Colorado were kissing said loop goodbye. I know what some of you might be thinking: Case, did you just spike your Blue Bell vanilla with Jose Cuervo?? I'll just take coffee grounds to make it look like French vanilla or vanilla bean, but that's not important now. Boise State has been winning. They just win. I mean, a lot. They'd have been perfect for the Big 12 North and would have been a force there. Wishful thinking, Sherlock, but it's too bad it won't happen. Boise State wanted to go to a BCS conference, but they've gone to just another one that's inferior. They missed out by not waiting an extra year, or they could have gone to a real conference that would have given them more exposure. It could have made this an elite conference (which I actually thought it was as of two years ago even though the league isn't that old).

So who might come over? Brigham Young? UNLV? There will be plenty to think about should the Big 12 decide to expand, which they should. It ought to grow back to twelve teams. I'd like to see the Houston Cougars moving into the division, as they have enjoyed a great rivalry with Texas. Some folks probably don't want to see it happen, but I wouldn't mind one bit. In the meantime, let the games begin for this year.

As they are, the Texas Longhorns still have one significant unanswered question going into fall play: How important will that quarterback position be? Garrett Gilbert was recently named coach Mack Brown's starter this fall. I'm extremely disappointed in this pick when there were guys in camp that did significantly better than Gilbert. This guy is terrible and I don't trust him as the starter. Fans have had to muddle through this moron at the helm for the past year, with disappointing results. Here's the link below with more.

I predicted the 'Horns would go 7-5, but if Gilbert plays, they will instead go 5-7. Given a preference, I'd rather see Texas go 12-0, but we have Oklahoma and the aforementioned A&M to deal with for now. I now predict that, before things are all said and done, Case McCoy will replace Gilbert at quarterback just a few games into the season. You watch. It's going to happen when the 'Horns get dragged down. McCoy is a sophomore with a ton of potential to do some things his older brother, Colt, did on some previous Longhorn teams, and now is a good time for him to be given a chance, especially with new offensive coordinator, Bryan Harsin, running the new Longhorns scoring machine. .. ~Sigh~. .. We'll just have to find out if Gilbert can make a big turnaround and become, at least, an efficient quarterback in the Big 12. If not, well, then let the cow nuggets fly like a Hail Mary pass.

I'm betting the ranch he won't.

Yeah, BYU sounds like the best option. Boise State isn't that appealing to me because it has a very small campus with a small enrollment. Also, it needs to show that it has something else aside from good athletics. I haven't seen it. (That might sound a little harsh, but it seems to be the elephant in the room.)

Obviously Brown and Harsin see something in Gilbert, or they wouldn't have picked him to start. If not...

I'm just ready to get cfb started. The temps in S. Texas will finally start to get close to normal Thursday, they say, just in time for the first oblong-shaped NCAA ball to kick off on the tube.

Then Saturday, my eyes will be glued to a certain webcast from Lubbock...

Harsin had better be a big miracle worker for Gilbert, or this season's down the tubes.

I know what you mean about Boise State in the other categories, but as good as that football program has gotten the last few years, being in the Big 12 would have paid dividends for the school. It can achieve bigger things. No matter now; they're in a no-name conference, and they'll still challenge for the top five.

Boise St. moved from the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) to the Mountain West. It did so after TCU, BYU, and Utah moved away from the MWC. Nevada and Fresno State will join them, if I remember correctly. The MWC is not a BCS conference.

And that's a shame, shoe. I was speaking hypothetically about what might be if Boise State had moved to the Big 12. We can certainly dream. They deserve better.
