Welcome To Case's Column

Let me say a big welcome to all of you for joining me here. I'm going to call these blog meetings Case's Column. I wanted to use "Corner", but that was already taken. Since 2008, it's been a real privilege to come on here and share some of my life with you, and it's a big world where we live.

In these blogs, I'll just speak whatever is on my mind, but we will be playing within the rules here. I may pick a particular topic, point out an event, or shoot the breeze. I'm a little bit of an essayist at times, so I'll just speak what's on my mind, and I might tell a story or two. Or, I might spew out an opinion or three. There will be some serious moments, some tender, some poignant, but there will also be those moments that you'll just bust out laughing. But, hopefully, everything will be in good fun here. And, of course, there's a place below for your comments and thoughts as we go along here. So feel free to join me for the ride -- I sure as heck hope I'm doing this right and not making any mistakes.

Thanks for taking your time in reading Case's Column. Hopefully, you'll enjoy being entertained by it as much as I've enjoyed putting these writings together. And thanks for the time you spend in City-Data.com, where it's great to be alive!

Regards,

The Perfect Location For The College Baseball Hall Of Fame

I couldn't believe it when I heard the good news. The College Baseball Hall Of Fame will be planning to set up a permanent shop for all to go see when it's all said and done. Members of the College Baseball Foundation have selected a site. The renderings, though not necessarily final, are put in place. So, what's the good news, you ask? The location of this new exhibit hall will be...........

Lubbock, Texas.

And there was much rejoicing! I mean, how can West Texans and Lubbockites not get excited about seeing something of this magnitude coming to their fine city? This will be the biggest boon that the Hub City has seen in some time, and I believe the impact will be incredible. So they didn't get Dubya's Presidential Library? No problem. Buddy Holly and his glasses now anticipate having some company just north of Downtown Lubbock. It's expected to be built adjacent to the Lubbock Memorial Civic Center. And that's if the project gets one last bit of funding, and I have faith that they'll get it.

Here's a link from the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal.

Just think: As visitors finish up their stay in Amarillo, having visited Palo Duro Canyon and Cadillac Ranch (not to mention a host of other goodies), they can just venture down Interstate 27 to good ol' Lubbock and visit a big shrine to college baseball's best. This is a big boost to Lubbock's tourism and, if built, will give more people a reason to come over and see what the buzz is about. Truth be told, you don't have to go to Amarillo when Lubbock has created one more opportunity for West Texas and Eastern New Mexico travelers. Besides, Texas Tech has a successful college athletic program, so this venture complements the bill perfectly (although the Red Raiders haven't beaten Texas or Rice for the baseball title). It's not just about Texas Tech, Buddy Holly, and cotton anymore. The moment this project is finished, you can count me in as someone who will make his way over and visit what I hope will become a Texas and national treasure.

I think it's excellent for the city. It will bring visitors who would otherwise not venture that direction. I like how the design incorporates a field, complete with dugouts. Hopefully it will be a catalyst for future development.

While the Tech baseball program has had its struggles since around 2005, Coach Dan Spencer (Tech alumnus who was pitching coach during Oregon State's CWS title run) has reinvigorated it and the team should be more successful in the coming years (this year's team would have made the regionals had it won one or two more games). The stadium upgrades at soon-to-be renamed Dan Law Field won't hurt.
