Welcome To Case's Column

Let me say a big welcome to all of you for joining me here. I'm going to call these blog meetings Case's Column. I wanted to use "Corner", but that was already taken. Since 2008, it's been a real privilege to come on here and share some of my life with you, and it's a big world where we live.

In these blogs, I'll just speak whatever is on my mind, but we will be playing within the rules here. I may pick a particular topic, point out an event, or shoot the breeze. I'm a little bit of an essayist at times, so I'll just speak what's on my mind, and I might tell a story or two. Or, I might spew out an opinion or three. There will be some serious moments, some tender, some poignant, but there will also be those moments that you'll just bust out laughing. But, hopefully, everything will be in good fun here. And, of course, there's a place below for your comments and thoughts as we go along here. So feel free to join me for the ride -- I sure as heck hope I'm doing this right and not making any mistakes.

Thanks for taking your time in reading Case's Column. Hopefully, you'll enjoy being entertained by it as much as I've enjoyed putting these writings together. And thanks for the time you spend in City-Data.com, where it's great to be alive!

Regards,

Here's A Way To Get A Discount: Get The Order Wrong

In a blog I did long, long ago, I discussed the travails of fast food line waiting and the order takers not listening to me when I order my meal. Now, we take the same basic idea to a sit-down restaurant, but this time, something happens after I was sure the order was made.

You see, this afternoon, I celebrated the start to my weekend at a local Cracker Barrel, and the waitress for today took my order and everything seemed just fine. Well, everything except the spoon on my table which had a speck of food that didn't get cleaned during the last wash (and that's another blog for another day). Recall time. The order I made earlier consisted of the following: Chicken-fried steak, mashed potatoes, green beans, pinto beans, biscuits, and iced tea. Stay with me now. She got the order fine and took it to the cooks. So I sat there, spoon fubar notwithstanding, and I looked around at the other eaters and the decor of the place and wondered why one waitress I requested didn't wait my table today. Hmmmm. Oh, well. Worse things can happen, right? Anyhow, by the time my dinner for the evening arrived at my table, everything looked right, but the chicken-fried steak looked a little stranger than usual. One bite revealed all the evidence.

Let's review:

Green beans - CHECK
Mashed potatoes - CHECK
Pinto beans - CHECK
Biscuits - CHECK
Iced tea - CHECK

Chicken-fried.....................chicken??!!

Okay, so this isn't a tragedy, but it wasn't what I ordered. Instead of taking it back in favor of CFS, I decided to eat that CFC that was so erroneously brought to my table. It was the most delicious error I've ever tasted. If they had brought me liver and onions, well, then that's a different ballgame. My waitress was kind enough not to charge me for the iced tea or for the eventual dessert (Coca-Cola cake and Blue Bell ice cream). Turns out the cooks mistook my wait lady's order.

Discount!

You see, you can turn lemons into lemonade with a clear-cut objective.

The cook may have been from Louisiana, where CFS is never eaten, according to something I've heard. (Could be mistaken though.)

I don't know if that has anything to do with it, shoe, but hey, at least they didn't put cayenne pepper (a la Popeye's) in my chicken.

I mean, I've had worse things happen. Bringing out one good thing instead of another good thing can be a good thing.
