Welcome To Case's Column

Let me say a big welcome to all of you for joining me here. I'm going to call these blog meetings Case's Column. I wanted to use "Corner", but that was already taken. Since 2008, it's been a real privilege to come on here and share some of my life with you, and it's a big world where we live.

In these blogs, I'll just speak whatever is on my mind, but we will be playing within the rules here. I may pick a particular topic, point out an event, or shoot the breeze. I'm a little bit of an essayist at times, so I'll just speak what's on my mind, and I might tell a story or two. Or, I might spew out an opinion or three. There will be some serious moments, some tender, some poignant, but there will also be those moments that you'll just bust out laughing. But, hopefully, everything will be in good fun here. And, of course, there's a place below for your comments and thoughts as we go along here. So feel free to join me for the ride -- I sure as heck hope I'm doing this right and not making any mistakes.

Thanks for taking your time in reading Case's Column. Hopefully, you'll enjoy being entertained by it as much as I've enjoyed putting these writings together. And thanks for the time you spend in City-Data.com, where it's great to be alive!

Regards,

The Joplin Tornado: A Reminder Of The Strength Of Nature's Forces

Posted 05-25-2011 at 08:03 PM by case44

It took one big path for one really wide tornado. That's all it would take for destruction like nothing this Texas critter had ever seen. You've probably seen the pics all over Google or any other internet source and can't find adequate words to describe the scenes at hand.

Sunday night, the city of Joplin, Missouri was forever changed. It took just one tornado to wipe out practically 80 percent of the city. And said pics would tell the whole story, and in more than a thousand words. Then again, we'd be speechless, so it may not really take so many words to describe the aftermath. When storms were hitting North Texas on Tuesday night, I was as vigilant as ever and could take nothing for granted. It served as a reminder that, while spring storms can be fun, there are other aspects that are also dangerous. In my region, we had funnel clouds, heavy rain, and hail ranging in size from pea to baseball to even grapefruit. Footage of said storms are chilling. The folks in Joplin, meanwhile, have no choice but to pick up the pieces and make sense of the recent destruction, and it will take years to rebuild. Years, folks, not days. It's like, where do they begin?

You can't help but feel for those people, but be reminded that this could have happened in your neighborhood every bit as much as it did in theirs. Joplin citizens have our prayers and I know that they can't let nature's occasional powers destroy the well-being of the American people, but rather, allow an opportunity to act in resolute resilience that things will be better in time. And resilience is in the blood of Americans. Stronger than any tornado is the will to build back up again. And so we shall.

Wow Case you are so right about Joplin being forever changed. I agree the fortitude of the people will rebuild but the heartbreaking reality is the many lives that were taken and the ones never to be seen again. These people not only have to rebuild their homes and materials but they have got to continue on their lives with only the memory of their loved ones that were taken in the few minutes that this tornado occurred.
