Charlie Chan: The Untold Story

Posted 05-22-2011 at 07:32 PM by LookinForMayberry

Charlie Chan: The Untold Story of the Honorable Detective and His Rendezvous with American History, by Yunte Huang

I came upon this book through our county library system webpage and reserved it without knowing anything about Charlie Chan. Purportedly from what I read, having just finished the book, he was an icon of our American history. Apparently, not only am I out of touch with my present pop culture, but with the past one, too.

Still it was a very interesting read, though I think it's possible that the author holds the fictional character in higher esteem than present day notoriety might indicate. To Mr. Huang Charlie was important, and he certainly did his homework to present his case. I may even reserve some of the works and judge for myself how important this character is, as far as my world is concerned. I could be missing out all these 55 years.

What I found especially interesting about Mr. Huang's work was the history he described. Apparently, we Americans have been just as blatantly unfair to Chinese-Americans as we have to African-Americans and Mexican-Americans. It seems there has been no end (as yet) to the depths we Caucasians will go to protect our perceived supremacy.

Thank goodness we finally outgrew our animosities toward the Asians. Given their numbers in our society now, and their contributions to our greater good, it would be downright embarrassing to continue to demonstrate our past behaviors. In fact, in light of how we've evolved past that childishness, my hopes are renewed for our continued evolution to a higher plane of consciousness.

Perhaps some day very soon, we'll be able to stop the nonsense toward our Mexican-Americans, and our Islamic-Americans, too.

Now, wouldn't that be worth writing a book about?
