A Murder of Crows

Bigun and I were out for our Saturday morning walk around the neighborhood when we saw a cluster of crows fly across our path, squawking and cawing like banshees. We stood and watched as they tumbled to the ground about fifty yards away. One at their center trying to escape the others -- maybe seven in all, clustered around it and beating it with their wings and beaks.
"Hey," I shouted. "Stop that!" We trotted over, Bigun in the lead, anxious to get in on whatever was happening, with me breathless behind, still shouting -- ignored.
"Break it up," I growled and lengthened the lead letting Bigun within a foot or two of them. He got their interest. They scattered in various directions. Three to a stand of evergreens behind us, two to a roof top before us. The others in directions away, away, away. I looked around to see if one was faltering, or injured, but none looked the worse for it.
Often I'd wondered at the phrase "a murder of crows" since first reading it, but no longer.
"Caw, caw, caw" they cried as we continued on our path.
"Oh, be quiet," I returned and glared at the insolence.
As we turned the corner, I heard it again and left them with the last word.
