on clutter

Posted 11-29-2008 at 02:08 PM by stillagirl

Okay, so I have alot of clutter, I'll admit. I have birthday cards from birth and boxes of papers that I compiled in a cleaning spree that I thought I would go through later. I have clothes that I haven't worn since junior high and clothes I am hoping to someday fit into as well as clothes that have become as permanantly fixed on a hangar in my closet as the baseboards below them. I have a problem with letting things go....dreams, craft projects, causes, old friends...ideas of how to be and it shows, but this is really what my blog is all about right now. The three people in my life who are full fledged members of the anti-clutter movement and are constantly letting me know my mess is a spiritual, pyhsical and emotional burden to us all are the wort offenders at contributing to my problem. I have one who continuously is dropping off bags of her no longer wanted items on my front porch, another who is constantly buying me things at yard sales and a third who gives me bags and bags of brochures and books and essays and quotes that she feels I should read and not that I don't appreciate the sentiments of thinking of me, but seriously there is a time when a gift given is a burden to the recipient. I mean seriously people do you give alcohol to an alcholic and tell them to just donate to a local bar if they don't want to use it???? I have gotten alot better at saying, "no thank you, that probably won't do anything for me." I still struggle, so for those of you who have loved ones with my similar problem, don't give them stuff, not even books about decluttering your life. Instead go in with three or four friends and hire them a cleaning lady for a day, or buy them tickets to a movie or concert or buy them songs songs and send it to their computer. Donate to some charity in their name, but don't add to their clutter.

Thanks Michelle. I am working on it seriously. I'm glad you were able to get rid of your stuff.
