Welcome To Case's Column

Let me say a big welcome to all of you for joining me here. I'm going to call these blog meetings Case's Column. I wanted to use "Corner", but that was already taken. Since 2008, it's been a real privilege to come on here and share some of my life with you, and it's a big world where we live.

In these blogs, I'll just speak whatever is on my mind, but we will be playing within the rules here. I may pick a particular topic, point out an event, or shoot the breeze. I'm a little bit of an essayist at times, so I'll just speak what's on my mind, and I might tell a story or two. Or, I might spew out an opinion or three. There will be some serious moments, some tender, some poignant, but there will also be those moments that you'll just bust out laughing. But, hopefully, everything will be in good fun here. And, of course, there's a place below for your comments and thoughts as we go along here. So feel free to join me for the ride -- I sure as heck hope I'm doing this right and not making any mistakes.

Thanks for taking your time in reading Case's Column. Hopefully, you'll enjoy being entertained by it as much as I've enjoyed putting these writings together. And thanks for the time you spend in City-Data.com, where it's great to be alive!

Regards,

Nothing Beats The Zest Of A Lemon

It's yellow. It's sour. It does a lot of good things. I'm talking about a little citrus fruit called a lemon. Gorgeous little creatures, aren't they? Also very versatile, too.

Lemons in my kitchen have been sliced up to squeeze its juices in my glasses of cold water. Just do yourself a favor and don't get any of same in your eye or all over your hands. Sticky, sticky, sti -- cky. But have you thought about another part of the lemon that ought to get talked about a little more? Outside of the rind and just under the peel of a lemon lies its zest. Zest is actually good for some things. Cooks have used it to incorporate stronger, bolder flavor in different foods, particularly cakes. I can't scientifically explain everything there is about the zest of one single lemon, but there is plenty to benefit from it.

Like, for example, the other day. I took a used lemon half and pushed it into the disposal in the kitchen sink. Why? Because it was very naughty? No. And that's because lemons also serve another great purpose. After said lemon was placed in the sink disposal, I turned on the water and flipped on the disposal switch to turn the chopper blades. The smell from the end result is absolutely incredible. Mmmmmmmmmm. You see, a lemon's zest also cleans out your drainpipes.

Excuse me while I sing something that might have been from Donovan:

I'm just mad about lemons
And lemons are mad about me
They call it Mellow Yellow......

Lemons aren't just for iced tea or lemonade. Not anymore. So many good things come out of them (and also one or two bad things if you aren't careful with them). Now, at restaurants, I do have to be mindful about where lemons have been or where they were stored once they're brought to the table. And, hopefully, with the slice not in my iced tea. I choose to have my lemon slices on the side. I was warned by a TV news story about bacteria a few years ago, and I've taken it seriously since, but that's not important now. When I'm at home, I'll keep my lemons in just the right place and it will serve for two uses: cleaning out my system and cleaning my sink.

See, a lemon really is useful for so many things, and I'm plumb thankful for it.

Three words that just tantalize my mind: Water with lemon.

It's great for your system. It's best when you really want to refresh.
