Welcome To Case's Column

Let me say a big welcome to all of you for joining me here. I'm going to call these blog meetings Case's Column. I wanted to use "Corner", but that was already taken. Since 2008, it's been a real privilege to come on here and share some of my life with you, and it's a big world where we live.

In these blogs, I'll just speak whatever is on my mind, but we will be playing within the rules here. I may pick a particular topic, point out an event, or shoot the breeze. I'm a little bit of an essayist at times, so I'll just speak what's on my mind, and I might tell a story or two. Or, I might spew out an opinion or three. There will be some serious moments, some tender, some poignant, but there will also be those moments that you'll just bust out laughing. But, hopefully, everything will be in good fun here. And, of course, there's a place below for your comments and thoughts as we go along here. So feel free to join me for the ride -- I sure as heck hope I'm doing this right and not making any mistakes.

Thanks for taking your time in reading Case's Column. Hopefully, you'll enjoy being entertained by it as much as I've enjoyed putting these writings together. And thanks for the time you spend in City-Data.com, where it's great to be alive!

Regards,

Case's Vacation Journal: Katz's 'Klosed' After All

Posted 04-04-2011 at 03:52 PM by case44

Well, here it is, another exciting road trip, and where better than in my home state of Texas? Your favorite blogger is observing and absorbing everything he can get his eyes.......and hands..........on.

My latest adventure takes me to Austin, Texas, where we've had overcast conditions for yesterday and the first part of today, giving way to beautiful sunshine. Picture-taking and sightseeing have been the orders of the day for first couple. Good food at some of my favorite and reliable places has also been a big part of the experience. As I journeyed downtown today, I noticed that a place that I had previous foodie occasions had shut down. The place was the world-renowned Katz's Deli, which is primarily based in New York City but has had two locations in Texas (and one of those in Austin) for a number of years. They used a slogan for years which told customers of their availability and flexibility, "Katz's Never Kloses." That would be Kloses with a K. Purposeful misspelling, if you please. The place today looked like it had been seized. Brown wrapping paper covered the insides of the windows and doors. A note was posted on the front door. It's Klosed, all right. Through the years, I've had quite a few meals with traditional, New-York style deli selections that I've enjoyed from Katz's. Now? No more.

What happened was that I actually thought they were still open when their website for Austin was actually still up and running. As I looked at it, I thought, well, maybe they've solved all the problems with the city (issues over lack of parking was one issue they have had with officials). It looked like they were going to move to another part of Austin. That never materialized. So, I did the Googlesearch thing and read the article via KVUE-TV's website and, sure enough, owner Marc Katz wanted to make changes with his life. So he shut down the place. Guess Austinites and others who visit will have to get their pastrami at another locale.

That's just the way it goes in the restaurant business. As with some of the things I plan, said plans can get changed. And this trip will include same. This is but another opportunity to try out another place where I've never been to, so I'd rather be excited than depressed. Opportunity is knocking. Tuesday will surely offer a change.

If you really want to enjoy some New York-style deli food that Katz's brings to the table, and you don't want to leave Texas, then you can go to Houston for the experience.

Katz's has two locations in the Houston area. Still none in Austin, and none new since defecting from Sixth Street.
