Welcome To Case's Column

Let me say a big welcome to all of you for joining me here. I'm going to call these blog meetings Case's Column. I wanted to use "Corner", but that was already taken. Since 2008, it's been a real privilege to come on here and share some of my life with you, and it's a big world where we live.

In these blogs, I'll just speak whatever is on my mind, but we will be playing within the rules here. I may pick a particular topic, point out an event, or shoot the breeze. I'm a little bit of an essayist at times, so I'll just speak what's on my mind, and I might tell a story or two. Or, I might spew out an opinion or three. There will be some serious moments, some tender, some poignant, but there will also be those moments that you'll just bust out laughing. But, hopefully, everything will be in good fun here. And, of course, there's a place below for your comments and thoughts as we go along here. So feel free to join me for the ride -- I sure as heck hope I'm doing this right and not making any mistakes.

Thanks for taking your time in reading Case's Column. Hopefully, you'll enjoy being entertained by it as much as I've enjoyed putting these writings together. And thanks for the time you spend in City-Data.com, where it's great to be alive!

Regards,

A Blast From The Past: Just Thought Of Someone

Posted 03-12-2011 at 08:40 AM by case44

Yesterday just happened to be March 11, and that's a day I sometimes still think about with decent enough reason. It's the birthday of a guy who was my best friend in second and third grades in elementary school. He's only the first of a few "best friends" that I've ever had. Best friends in concept is practically a foreign idea to me because they all seem to just move away and not stay around.

Friday was his birthday, assuming, of course, that he is still alive. He's 45 years old if he is. Oh, I'll do a Google-search later on, plus any other necessary thing to look people up in, and try to find out. The thing is, he was just on my mind. As a kid, he had lived in the Dallas-Fort Worth area in Texas before moving to Phoenix, Arizona, and then on to Anaheim, California for his three remaining high school years. We had written to one another off and on in the elementary and junior high years and I even visited him in person in Phoenix (where he had moved back to after graduation) in 1987. When I saw him at 21, he looked ragged and drugged out. His apartment smelled like incense. His car was filled with bottles and cans (I swear, the back seat was so full of same that there was no leg room at all). Judging from the girlfriend he hung out with (and, admittedly, she did creep me out a bit), my erstwhile best friend was simply a mess.

Scenes like that bring such said concern to me. Whatever did become of him?? Maybe he's gotten his life straightened out, got married, has a great job, and has kids. Maybe he hasn't. I honestly wouldn't know at this point, and if I had time later on, I would search on my computer. As this piece is being written, I know you folks are probably reaching for some Kleenex right now, and by all means, you're entitled to it if you wish. As for me, there's no point in wasting time being depressed. I'd much rather be joyous and in a good mood. There was this thought of this one person who entered my mind. It was only March 11, and I still wouldn't forget that day.

Never take anything for granted. ... He may be 45. ... Or is he??

I've known people like that. Fortunately, they cleaned themselves up and got their lives in order, but it took a long time in each situation.
