Welcome To Case's Column

Let me say a big welcome to all of you for joining me here. I'm going to call these blog meetings Case's Column. I wanted to use "Corner", but that was already taken. Since 2008, it's been a real privilege to come on here and share some of my life with you, and it's a big world where we live.

In these blogs, I'll just speak whatever is on my mind, but we will be playing within the rules here. I may pick a particular topic, point out an event, or shoot the breeze. I'm a little bit of an essayist at times, so I'll just speak what's on my mind, and I might tell a story or two. Or, I might spew out an opinion or three. There will be some serious moments, some tender, some poignant, but there will also be those moments that you'll just bust out laughing. But, hopefully, everything will be in good fun here. And, of course, there's a place below for your comments and thoughts as we go along here. So feel free to join me for the ride -- I sure as heck hope I'm doing this right and not making any mistakes.

Thanks for taking your time in reading Case's Column. Hopefully, you'll enjoy being entertained by it as much as I've enjoyed putting these writings together. And thanks for the time you spend in City-Data.com, where it's great to be alive!

Regards,

Daylight Savings Time: You've Just Got To Love It!

Posted 02-27-2011 at 05:29 PM by case44

Are we just about there yet? I believe we are (as I'm writing this), as the trusty calendar in the Case kitchen reads it being March 13, when 2 a.m. suddenly becomes 3 a.m. Not that I mind, really. I'll just have to wake up at 3 the day before and go to bed at 7. Problem solved.

There's no problem, really. It's just that I'm pumped about the extra daylight we're about to get. This is the time of year I always look forward to because the color changes of daybreak will slowly start to begin out of the northeastern sky before 6 a.m. in my hometown. Spring temperatures appear here to stay, so Old Man Winter has been asked not to stay in our hotels. As that happens, I look forward to driving to work and being able to witness the pinks, peaches, oranges, purples, and yellows on the northeastern horizon at a specific Dallas-area freeway interchange where I can get the best view. Yes, those of us in the U.S. do spring forward and lose an hour of sleep and complain about why we're not falling back instead, but that's not important now. Your ol' pal Case is ready for some longer days which I've been longing for since, oh, about November.

March 13, y'all. Mark it down.

In the vernacular of the calendar, what occurs the week after is called the spring solstice, which, in other words, is the first day of spring. The vernal equinox, if you please. Yeeeeee-hah! Sure, the earth's axial tilt and rotation significantly changes during this time, but I'm much more interested in the end result for the time being. Longer days, better sunrises, and even better sunsets. You've just got to love it!

And if you don't, well, you just don't like fabulous second-floor patio views with a cup of Starbucks coffee in your hand.

I'm ready for that time change, too, Case. It's practically here. And is there any way you can make me a cup of your, uh, kitchen blend?
