I am trying to understand the GOP perspective ...

Posted 01-26-2011 at 01:50 PM by LookinForMayberry

but I cannot seem to get from here to there given their assertions.

Maybe I just don't understand their goals.

If they want smaller government, does that mean that they want less services? What do we cut out?

Do we let people starve to death? Or freeze? How many homeless to we have to have before a Republican is satisfied?

How many people have to die from lack of health care before a Republican wants them cared for?

I read yesterday that the US Postal Service has to close offices in remote areas because they are not profitable. Will a Republican deliver the mail to the poor in those areas that cannot get their mail delivered?

When Republicans stand with their right hand over their heart, do they say "...divisable under God?"

When do Republicans start realizing we are ALL Americans, whatever our differences, and we ALL deserve the respect every human deserves?

My understanding of the Republican Party is, that they want people to rely on people, and not the Government.

Back in the 'early days', you came over and you had relatives or neighbors who helped you out, when ever they could. Big family gatherings on Sunday for a meal, cooked by Mom, herself, and all that...

They didnt want Government to make people dependent on them, via the Welfare System, where you have generations of family, (yes, I know of several generational family who would kill you, before they would let thier 'Government Check' be taken away from them!), who would rather do anything they can, avoiding work, and being happy living off the Government, so that they actually got the attitude that the Government "Owes Me"!!

Me? Ive worked since I was sixteen and havent been with out a job, for more than three months, (and that was because I tried my hand at going to College after the Military, and it wasnt for me, so, I worked til I retired).

Republicans realize that some taxes are needed for roads and infrastructure of our Nation, but, death taxes, on farms and businesses, preclude a lot of people from continuation of family businesses, such as farms or other businesses because they cant afford to pay the taxes to keep it!! I dont agree with that one! If I were a farmer, and my kids were farmers and they wanted to keep the farm in the family, they shouldnt be taxed right out of it, so that the farm is sectioned off and sold to people who will build this or that, and it will be one less farmer in America to produce food. This is why the Mega-Cooperations took over a lot of farms, because they can pay the taxes, and get that farm, and the farmers have lost thier way of living for untold generations, and the family, who have owned the plots of land, since, who knows when, are run out of thier own property!

Yea, you may not care one whit about that, but, when your food and veggies are getting set by big Coorporations, and its priced at high rates, then you will start to scream! (Just one of my pet peeves ).

The only thing I have against the Democrats, is abortion. Sorry, Im against killing a fetus, or a baby who is almost out of the womb, except for his/her head and a pair of scissors stuck in there, to kill the poor thing in a partial birth abortion! Its all murder to me... Im Religious, and believe that the LORD put that fetus in there, by way of intercourse or sex, and, that we have no right to kill him/her.

If it wasnt for this one issue, it wouldnt make a differnce to me, if a Republican or Democrat was in the White House, because Im retired and earned my pension.

But, until the Democrats give up this nonesense of killing unborn fetuses, or using them for research, no, I cant vote Democrat, because of that one issue that will always be against what I hold dear, that life is precious, and, even if a child has down syndrom or any other deformity, the LORD put life there for a reason, and if its only to make each of us a better person, just for knowing that person with a disability, it serves HIS purpose.

These are just my personal views, and if they offend anyone, accept my apologies for your offence, but, my views will never change.

My diatribe is done for this thread.

    I wish you well...

Thank you, Jesse. I do appreciate your candor, and I even agree with a lot of what you said. I am a native of Michigan, and most of my family were auto workers. Some of them live on farms. My grandfather augmented his polishing and buffing business (that he operated in the barn), by growing feed corn for the neighbors dairy cows. I am not ignorant of the plight of the farmers.

So, MAYBE if the GOP would speak to more specifics when they talk about taxes, as individuals and collectively as a nation, we could find common ground.

Before I close, I want to say a few words about the topic of abortion. First, I want to say that I DO support a woman's right to choose. I DO believe in God. I believe that God gives each of us the freedom to choose, and therefore we should not try to impose our will on others.

That said, I don't believe I could make the choice to terminate a pregnancy, but then I've never been in a position to have to choose. I do know a lot of mothers that -- for the sake of their children, I wish they would've elected to not become mothers. Still, that is between them and their families.

I don't think anyone the speaks their truth as eloquently as you have could be considered offensive. You certainly have not offended me. I am honored that you took the time to share. Thank you.

Hey, Lookin', the problem isn't small government. It is what big government plans to do to the American people if this health care law isn't repealed in the next few years. We'd all be going bankrupt because of what our president didn't want to reveal among hundreds of pages of "stuff" inside that law. It needs to be changed. Americans should never be forced by the government regarding their personal health care by having insurance shoved down their throats and be taxed the living daylights. It should be our choice.

You know Case', you've made a few comments there that I hope you will come back to elaborate on, because I think you've hit on a few of the points that trouble me the most.

For example, "what big government plans to do to the American people if this health care law isn't repealed in the next few years."

I don't really understand this idea that government is a "they." WE are the government, or at least OUR elected officials. Yet, more than 65% of US do NOT vote. We just sit around hurling objections about a government we choose not to participate with. I don't understand that behavior.

Then there's that comment: "We'd all be going bankrupt because of what our president didn't want to reveal among hundreds of pages of "stuff" inside that law." Our president, and every one that proposes an Act of government makes it publicly available. So no one has hidden anything. Case, you can go read it right now. There is nothing hidden.

And exactly what "stuff" about it concerns you?

As far as: "It needs to be changed. Americans should never be forced by the government regarding their personal health care by having insurance shoved down their throats and be taxed the living daylights. It should be our choice," goes, I wonder how informed you really are about this topic.

Did you know that most people are not uninsured by "choice" but because they've been denied insurance either by insurers because of their pre-existing conditions, or because the individual health care was cost prohibitive to them? Did you know that a lion's share of our citizen's bankrupted got their because of their health care costs?

The Health Care ACT make it possible for everyone to HAVE insurance.

As for taxes, have you ever examined the tax structures? Most people making higher incomes are paying less taxes than the poor. Oddly enough, in these times of a strained economy, it is the poor and uneducated that are being hit the hardest in tax cuts to programs that benefit them.

One might almost think that you've been influenced by health insurers and persons that don't really want you to benefit from your tax dollars paid.

Yes, Case. Please come back and explain how you've come to these conclusions that baffle me.
