Welcome To Case's Column

Let me say a big welcome to all of you for joining me here. I'm going to call these blog meetings Case's Column. I wanted to use "Corner", but that was already taken. Since 2008, it's been a real privilege to come on here and share some of my life with you, and it's a big world where we live.

In these blogs, I'll just speak whatever is on my mind, but we will be playing within the rules here. I may pick a particular topic, point out an event, or shoot the breeze. I'm a little bit of an essayist at times, so I'll just speak what's on my mind, and I might tell a story or two. Or, I might spew out an opinion or three. There will be some serious moments, some tender, some poignant, but there will also be those moments that you'll just bust out laughing. But, hopefully, everything will be in good fun here. And, of course, there's a place below for your comments and thoughts as we go along here. So feel free to join me for the ride -- I sure as heck hope I'm doing this right and not making any mistakes.

Thanks for taking your time in reading Case's Column. Hopefully, you'll enjoy being entertained by it as much as I've enjoyed putting these writings together. And thanks for the time you spend in City-Data.com, where it's great to be alive!

Regards,

Scattershooting Once Again / Burger Wars Heating Up In North Texas

Hello, gentle readers. It's one more round of Scattershooting before we hit the New Year's Day trail. The world is definitely not an uneventful place, so let's hop on for the ride and see where this thing takes us.

********

What's this? Another burger joint from another state about to make inroads in North Texas? That's right. In the last few years, we have had the likes of Five Guys, Krystal, and Smashburger come into the fold in the Dallas-Fort Worth restaurant landscape. And never mind that we have a slew of local chains, plus all the fast-fooders out there. Well, we have another one coming, and I never seriously thought they'd come, despite all the rumors about it. The California-based In-N-Out Burger is coming to North Texas. Yepper, these guys are planning two locations that I know of, and one of those will just be fifteen minutes from my apartment.

With as much competition as is out there now, the real question is, will I try that place? Maybe. If I do, I'll certainly let you in on it, as I am curious. And if I don't like it, well, I can always go to Scotty P's.

Earthquakes in Indiana?? Hard to believe, but maybe not, after you read this:

This just in: The ABC affiliate in Dallas has decided not to air the network's "New Year's Rockin' Eve" in its normal time slot, opting instead for a local special. It would be the first time that WFAA-TV (Channel 8) would not air "Rockin' Eve" since its inception in 1972. Nothing against Ryan Seacrest, but the ratings likely are going down since Dick Clark relinquished his host duties following a 2004 stroke.

Will the Houston Texans fire head coach Gary Kubiak or will he be kept?? That's an agonizing question facing Houston football fans this coming week as a decision on the future of the Texans looms largely. It's in owner Bob McNair's hands now. A decision will likely also be made regarding GM Rick Smith. The Texans performed well under expectations this season, with a 5-10 record going into Sunday's game with Jacksonville (as I'm writing this, not necessarily as you may be reading it). Going into the season, they were expected to make their first playoff appearance in franchise history, possibly as a Wild Card, but instead, will have a losing record for the eighth time in nine seasons. Stay tuned, and you'll hear about what happens somewhere on City-Data, if not from me.

My vacation plans are a go for mid-January. I'm taking my R&R back on the road, but it will be a series of short road trips within a two-hour drive from my abode. There will also be day excursions in nearby Ft Worth and Dallas during that time. Nonetheless, I need it because, dang it, you just need a fresh body writing these wonderful blogs.

And now, it's time for the Word Of The Day. This time, our word is year. Another year has come and gone. A new year is about to be born. What will happen in this coming year? Who knows? Plenty of news headlines and personal happenings are certainly in the offing. And life still goes on. So, let me say to you right here, right now: Happy New Year!!!

And there you are.
