Welcome To Case's Column

Let me say a big welcome to all of you for joining me here. I'm going to call these blog meetings Case's Column. I wanted to use "Corner", but that was already taken. Since 2008, it's been a real privilege to come on here and share some of my life with you, and it's a big world where we live.

In these blogs, I'll just speak whatever is on my mind, but we will be playing within the rules here. I may pick a particular topic, point out an event, or shoot the breeze. I'm a little bit of an essayist at times, so I'll just speak what's on my mind, and I might tell a story or two. Or, I might spew out an opinion or three. There will be some serious moments, some tender, some poignant, but there will also be those moments that you'll just bust out laughing. But, hopefully, everything will be in good fun here. And, of course, there's a place below for your comments and thoughts as we go along here. So feel free to join me for the ride -- I sure as heck hope I'm doing this right and not making any mistakes.

Thanks for taking your time in reading Case's Column. Hopefully, you'll enjoy being entertained by it as much as I've enjoyed putting these writings together. And thanks for the time you spend in City-Data.com, where it's great to be alive!

Regards,

Life Without The Internet? No Way, And Don't Ask Me To Switch Back

Remember how things were? Was there really such a thing as "the Good Old Days"? I mean, look at all of us today. We're probably better-prepared people today than ever before. Why? Because I use the Internet to plan things now. And, yes, so do you.

Before this thing called the Internet came along, you had to hear about things by ear. You had to wait for a traffic report on the radio. You had to wait for a weather report on TV (especially if said proceedings are not interrupted by a golf game going over). You had to search newspapers for sports schedules, events, want-ads, or whatnot. Now you've got more information about people, places, things, and not only that, but there is access to radio stations that are not in your local area. Imagine that. It's called streamlining. That's what I happen to be doing as I'm typing this latest excursion while I'm doing another Case study. (Sounds of wild laughter in the background)

Can you just think for a moment about life without the internet?? We would not want a return to the way things were. That's because same would just start to drive me completely crazy after we've been exposed to all that's made available to us now. Those of you who wish for a return to a life without the Internet, well, you just don't like driving a hundred miles for really good barbecue.

And, lest we not forget, no Internet would have meant no City-Data, no Google-searches, no Case's Column, and no instant access to restaurant menus. I'm just making you folks think right now. Life would just be one unplanned mess with things piling up that you can't get around to. How would we get along if the Internet would just go away and disappear?? It's just not going to happen. Maybe we can all live under a rock and pretend nothing's happening at all. .......... But we won't.

Sorry. With every good thing, there are always pros, cons, strengths, and weaknesses. It's very addictive if one isn't careful, but it's helped me plan my life much better than paper products, word of mouth, or anything else ever could. The way things were??! You can have your front porch with the nice swing and enjoy a cool breeze, but let us keep the Internet. Switch back?? I'd rather eat dirt.

I'm with you, Case. You really can accomplish so many more things now that everything that previously wasn't within reach a few years ago now is. We take so much for granted and we're so spoiled that we tend to forget how things used to be.
