Life is Like That

Posted 11-28-2010 at 07:25 AM by LookinForMayberry

Years ago in a church workshop we were instructed to make up a collage of images depicting our vision of what God was to us, personally. As I started going through old magazines and clipping images that reminded me of God's presence in my life, I discovered that I was selecting more images than I was rejecting. In fact, it was hard to find an image that didn't remind me of God.

I quickly came to the realization that life was just a metaphor for God. Life IS God.

A couple of years ago, I started a Mindfulness practice, because I discovered that most of my problems in life were occurring because I wasn't being mindful. With each new reading on the topic, I came to the conclusion that Mindfulness is pretty simple in theory: BE HERE, NOW. Tough to practice.

The funny thing about it is that it wasn't until this morning, while attempting to master the art of knitting in the round on double pointed needles, that I realized that while one is staying present in the NOW, one is really staying present with God.

While I am struggling to master four knitting needles holding a bunch of loops, trying to make more loops into the existing loops, with my two untrained hands, I have to remain totally present in the moment. If I don't, I end up with a knotted mess.

Life is like that, meeting the current challenges while at the same time trying to preserve the existing established assets requires keeping "on point." Success means staying Present.

With God, all things are possible. When we let our minds wander into that wilderness of unmindful thoughts, we lose that vision. The Buddhists call that "Right Mind."

Those that practice Mindfulness call Now the Everlasting Moment. Buddhists call it Enlightenment. Christians call it Everlasting Life. Whatever you call it, it's a lot happier when we do it, and things get pretty dicey when we do not.

I guess the lesson for me, this morning, is to "stick to my knitting."
