Giving back some blessings in ways I'd not thought

Posted 11-03-2010 at 06:54 AM by LookinForMayberry

Last night I went to my orientation at the local animal shelter, rescue, adoption center. I never realized how fragile the health of sheltered pets can be, and how many precautions are needed to keep the pets healthy and ready for adoption! I have to admit that by the end of the orientation, I wasn't sure I could do the job. Between all the hand sanitizing (I have severe skin sensitivities), and the risk of bring home ringworm, FIV, or parvo to my kids, I was pretty spooked.

How relieved I was when they told me they hoped I would volunteer as their receptionist! My romantic notions of working with the pets was broken, but at least I can still serve them indirectly. (Also, they have signed me up for Tuesday evenings, so I can still dedicate my Thursday evenings to helping the homeless, or the hungry. I am hoping to find a food bank to work for, nearby.)

I've also been invited to participate in Petsmart's community of Pet Parents. It's by invitation only, but otherwise similar to C-D's pet forum. Another way to help pets with challenges.

Things are coming together not quite the way I planned, but certainly still meeting my hopes. Thank God I can find some way to give back some of the blessings I've received.
