Welcome To Case's Column
Let me say a big welcome to all of you for joining me here. I'm going to call these blog meetings Case's Column. I wanted to use "Corner", but that was already taken.
Since 2008, it's been a real privilege to come on here and share some of my life with you, and it's a big world where we live.
In these blogs, I'll just speak whatever is on my mind, but we will be playing within the rules here. I may pick a particular topic, point out an event, or shoot the breeze. I'm a little bit of an essayist at times, so I'll just speak what's on my mind, and I might tell a story or two. Or, I might spew out an opinion or three. There will be some serious moments, some tender, some poignant, but there will also be those moments that you'll just bust out laughing. But, hopefully, everything will be in good fun here. And, of course, there's a place below for your comments and thoughts as we go along here. So feel free to join me for the ride -- I sure as heck hope I'm doing this right and not making any mistakes.![Stick Out Tongue](https://pics3.city-data.com/forum/images/smilies/tongue.gif)
Thanks for taking your time in reading Case's Column. Hopefully, you'll enjoy being entertained by it as much as I've enjoyed putting these writings together. And thanks for the time you spend in City-Data.com, where it's great to be alive!
Regards,
case44

Scattershooting Yet Again / Overaggressive Roadside Ads
Time to do more scattershooting right here on Case's Column. You've got the time, and I've got the root beer, so together, we can slam down a cold one in this space. Besides, who could really turn down a cold, eight-ounce bottle of IBC? Or, perhaps, another one of my blog posts? ![Big Grin](https://pics3.city-data.com/forum/images/smilies/biggrin.gif)

The signs, seemingly, are everywhere. A new convenience store and travel center has just made inroads in my home state of Texas. You'll never be without reminding, and often. Travelers on Interstate 45 will know just outside of Dallas that Buc-ee's will await their presence. It's in Madisonville, Texas, and the first alert is 120 miles away! That's not all, folks. You see not just one sign. You'll see many more signs telling you different things you'll get from Buc-ee's. Talk about bombarded. Who could resist such clever lines as these? Here they are:
ICE MADE FROM SCRATCH
EAT HERE, GET GAS
THE TEXAS RESTROOM HALL OF FAME
UBER COOL
OMG! BEAVER NUGGETS!
In case you don't know, the mascot for Buc-ee's is a cute little beaver. Those ads are just the tip of the iceberg, and there are many more which I don't have on hand. In addition, travelers from Houston are forced to see these Buc-ee's ads on Interstate 10 going westward toward San Antonio (that location is in Luling). You'll see them in the same fashion as the other highway. I've had the privilege of stopping at both locations to get gasoline. It's a mighty fine place, but is it really worth all the overaggressive promoting??
Heck, yes!![OK](https://pics3.city-data.com/forum/images/smilies/oglvvd.gif)

Who would have thought the Texas Rangers would be in the 2010 World Series? Or, for that matter, any fall classic? The team I grew up watching. The team that was the poster child of bad baseball. Guess what? They just might be turning the corner. If my Houston Astros keep improving for 2011 the way they did in the second half of 2010, things could get real interesting in the Lone Star state in the next few years.

Election Day is getting closer and closer in America in the coming days. Families, husbands, wives, singles, business people, teachers, doctors, and many others are making decisions that can change this nation, potentially for years. Early voting is almost over in a number of places. If you haven't voted yet, folks, please remember to do so, and to exercise your right. Our country depends on you to make a difference.

Don't laugh, but there's still a good rock oldies radio station to be found in Texas. In the era of corporate-run radio with limited playlists and no regard for listeners, there is a place you can go to get away for a little while. KKCL-FM (98.1) in Lubbock is playing 60s-70s rock and pop oldies the way they should be. I mean, there are songs here that you will never hear in any other place, and the playlist is the longest I've ever experienced in the many years that I've listened to oldies radio. This puts the big cities to shame. Maybe Dallas, Houston, and San Antonio can learn a few lessons from KKCL and try to recapture the glory of what oldies radio ought to be about, and that's the music that made the format great in the first place. Those aforementioned big cities ought to be embarrassed.

And now, it's time for the Word Of The Day, which is air. There's nothing like crisp, clean air that we breathe when Fall is here. It also means that cooler weather is in the air as we move into November and closer to the winter months. Hey, it's time for me to air out my new Buc-ee's T-shirt. If you don't like how it looks, well, you just don't like beaver nuggets.
And if you've got anything else to air out, well, just save it for another blog!
And there you are.![Smile](https://pics3.city-data.com/forum/images/smilies/smile.gif)

Giants up 2-0, case. These Ranger guys better do something quick, or they'll end up like the Astros of '05!
Been to Buc-ee's, too. Did you know that they don't allow 18-wheelers on their properties? They don't. It's probably because they try to gear these stores more to families and those who don't drive big rigs. Interesting.Posted 10-30-2010 at 12:07 PM by malfunction -
I did notice that, mal. It's kind of funny and comical in one sense. Then again, there are plenty of truck stops where gearjammers can park it. Why not just have a convenience store on steroids?

Congrats to the Rangers, they had a goal in mind, and while they came up short, they should be excited about making franchise history, defeating the explosive Rays and what has to be the most inflated payroll of any business anywhere in the world in the Yanks.
I sometimes can't help but crack up at the billboards on I-10 advertising Buc-ee's. Who comes up with those? I especially like the texting parodies.Posted 11-04-2010 at 10:43 PM by shoe01 -
