Welcome To Case's Column

Let me say a big welcome to all of you for joining me here. I'm going to call these blog meetings Case's Column. I wanted to use "Corner", but that was already taken. Since 2008, it's been a real privilege to come on here and share some of my life with you, and it's a big world where we live.

In these blogs, I'll just speak whatever is on my mind, but we will be playing within the rules here. I may pick a particular topic, point out an event, or shoot the breeze. I'm a little bit of an essayist at times, so I'll just speak what's on my mind, and I might tell a story or two. Or, I might spew out an opinion or three. There will be some serious moments, some tender, some poignant, but there will also be those moments that you'll just bust out laughing. But, hopefully, everything will be in good fun here. And, of course, there's a place below for your comments and thoughts as we go along here. So feel free to join me for the ride -- I sure as heck hope I'm doing this right and not making any mistakes.

Thanks for taking your time in reading Case's Column. Hopefully, you'll enjoy being entertained by it as much as I've enjoyed putting these writings together. And thanks for the time you spend in City-Data.com, where it's great to be alive!

Regards,

This Was Not The Kind Of Change I Had Expected

Posted 10-23-2010 at 11:50 AM by case44

Of all the unbelievable things that can happen in this world, I would never have expected this as it happened while I was on the scene. I was in San Antonio on a road trip to go to the Riverwalk, and I parked in a usually-reliable parking lot where I know I will be taken care of the moment I leave it.

And it looked like the joke was on this writer with what was discovered.

You see, as I was leaving the Riverwalk area to run a quick, local errand (hey, every blogger has to have bottled water chilling in the hotel fridge, but I digress), I noticed something different at the pay station compared to the last three or four times I dropped in: it was unmanned! So, I had to shell out a ten-dollar bill, but instead of a real person to give it to upon leaving, there was a change-maker machine at said kiosk. I inserted the Hamilton and out came five dollars. Not Abe Lincolns, mind you. These were gold one-dollar coins that emerged into my hot little hand. Wow. You don't see that happening every day. Should I pick another parking lot next time around? Oh, that's another blog, but come on, a kiosk without a person manning it? Texas' economy isn't that bad, folks, is it?! Surely, a place like San Antonio, which gets tons on tourism, can afford a few able-bodied people to man the money counters in these parking lots. I usually prefer getting back actual dollar bills which I could use for later, not the nice gold coins which I'd rather hang on to for keeps.

As if fate weren't enough, I had eaten barbecue in Luling, TX, the previous day, and I had gotten back two half-dollar coins by a person at the meat counter. Somebody on my road trip stopping points has had some rare cash to give away, haven't they? Maybe I should enjoy it all while I've got the opportunity.

    Automation is cheaper, sometimes.

This just in: Lubbock is getting flights to Denver next year. While it's not an earth-shattering event, it's an improvement over what was the case. Hopefully more destinations will be added in the future, such as San Antonio, Phoenix, L.A., DC, Chicago, etc.

    Great news, shoe.

Automation is good now and then, but if you have to hunch over in your car and reach to put in your dollar bill in the machine, well, that's no fun.

It's funny how you can accumulate those kinds of coins in the same trip. I never even see dollar coins anymore.

    Can I borrow yours?
