Halloween in the Hood...

Posted 10-17-2010 at 08:50 AM by Time and Space

Happy Halloween everyone...

This use to be my favorite month...still is, but just doesn't feel special anymore....

I think only once, as an adult, was I in an enviornment where I felt comfortable enough to half dress up, put out decorations, and hand out candy and all...

It was fun...I had roomates who sorta were in to it to...

At the time I was living with a mix couple...black guy and a tough city white gal...we were all roomates...worked out quite well actually...

We lived just up the street from 2 same sex clubs...both well ran, no drama from them or anything...

It was a mix working class community...young metropolitan whites, home owners, apartments, and older retired...it was a good mix, it kept the place balanced....

This community, which had a high gay population, borderlined the hardcore 'hood'...

Here's how the 'hood' creeps it's way into nicer, more calm communities...

Realistate investers will buy a house in a decent part of town...and instead of selling it, they chop it up...and rent out the rooms to people...so it becomes like a rooming house or dorm setting...

Well most people who respond to 'Room for rent' adds...have some kind of social or economic issue...meaning can't sign normal lease, or get a house...and so do the rooming house thing...

Most of these leasors don't properly screen those moving in, all they want is the money...so as a result, end up leasing their rooms to all sorts of questionable tenants...

I've learned, you can lease a room in a nice n-hood to someone with a 'hood' mentality...and they will not change...they will simply bring the hood drama with them...

I got to see this first hand...I would move into a place...with guys I did not know...and their social skills were appauling...they were simply a product of their enviornment though...

Simple things like 'sharing' or buying dish soap for the kitchen, and a dish rack and dining whare...were totally foriegn to them...

Whenever I moved in...it's like I became 'Alice' the maid or house mother, from the Brady Bunch.
I mean I did my best to bring some kind of resemblance of order, trust, and sanitation to the few places I moved into...

Like i was the mother and father they never had...I'm talking grown men here...these guys were grown...

Anyways, as usual I'm getting way off base here...I'm suppose to be talking about Halloween in the Hood...

There really is none...last year only one household put up decorations...and they were like Russians or Easter Europeans or something...very nice family, with kids, cousins and whoever else living there...

But they have since moved...

There is not much outer display of creativity where I live in and around the holidays...kids are forced to act hard and grow up fast...

Unlike where I'm from, where you were allowed to be young and remain a kid until you were 18, down here your allowed to be young and remain a kid until your all of 8 years old...then it's on...and your expected to act like a hardcore adult with an attitude...

I find the whole situation sickening and gross...

It's all about enviornment, and most of these kids will never see anything different...

Oh well...so goes life in the hood...
