Whatever will be, will be

My experience with the cat rescue a couple of weekends ago, coupled with reading a friend's posts about her dedication to cats got me enthused about volunteering to help local cats in need. I "googled" for locations of shelters in my area, selected the closest to my home and work, and emailed them. I was thinking I would go over, let them see I wasn't the untrustworthy type, and they'd put me to work cleaning cages, or whatever.

Instead I got a reply sending me to a url for an application, and IF I was approved I could come some time in the next month for a full three hour MANDATORY class, buy a $6 t-shirt, and then they would figure out where I could help.

Probably, had the woman just invited me in, handed me the application, given me a tour, and then let me know a class was needed -- sort of leading me through it, I would've been more inclined. Now, well -- not.

It got me to thinking about how often I've set up barriers to my good by laying down a bunch of ground rules, drawing lines in the proverbial sand, crossed my arms over all my pipe dreams, and then glared at all comers.

I think we all create a picture in our mind of how life should be according to our small, narrow views. Then the big, wide, happy world comes our way offering all it has for us, and we cannot fit it into our tiny peephole.

Today, I am reconnecting with a friend that I haven't seen since before leaving on the trip. Tomorrow, I hope to spend a quiet day at home cooking meals for the coming week, and doing some yard work. However, some time after work next week, I think I will download that application, and then on another day drive over and deliver it. I'll ask for a tour, and maybe sign up for that darned three hour class.

What the heck. My "peephole" could use a good stretching.
