Thanks to expert movers Steve and Kathy P. for sharing their extensive moving experience with me. They are retired military and have the moving thing down pat. Since moving companies have one of the highest rates of complaints and scams of any business in the US, protect yourself by getting recommendations and checking out each company yourself. Movers are expensive, so make sure you don’t end up paying in more ways than one.
1) The North Carolina Utilities Commission regulates and monitors movers. The link below is to their page.

.htm
Midway down, under Transportation, are three PDF
documents that anyone who is
moving needs to review. Be sure to check out rate
information, estimate definitions, etc.
2) Also very helpful are Better Business Bureau reports. Go to
their website and look up by name any mover you are
contemplating using by name or phone number. It’s great if
the company is a member. This gives you one more avenue
of complaint if there is a
problem, but a report may be present even if they are not.

They also have good information in an article you can reach at the link below .
http://www.bbb.org/alerts/article.asp?ID=229
3) The Governor’s Office has moving tips of all sorts on the page you will reach by clicking
on the link below.
http://www.nc.gov/asp/subpages/intention.asp?P=2&I=25
4) The North Carolina Movers Association is a professional
association of certified movers. They have hints and
explanations about moving
http://www.ncmovers.org/news.php
4) Your insurance company may not cover your goods in transit and movers often have
limited coverage. Make sure your valuables are protected.
These should help ensure a good experience with your moving company. If for some reason you do have a complaint that cannot be resolved directly with the company, or if you suspect fraud
or unscrupulous practices, go to: http://www.ncdoj.com/DocumentStreamerClient?directory=CPTipAlert/&file=Movers.pdf
and follow their instructions. They also offer preventive tips.
There are two complaint resources, on for in state and one for interstate moves. Don’t forget to make a complaint to the BBB, too, since many people look there. This will help others avoid less desirable companies.
Thanks,
Gail
