Welcome To Case's Column

Let me say a big welcome to all of you for joining me here. I'm going to call these blog meetings Case's Column. I wanted to use "Corner", but that was already taken. Since 2008, it's been a real privilege to come on here and share some of my life with you, and it's a big world where we live.

In these blogs, I'll just speak whatever is on my mind, but we will be playing within the rules here. I may pick a particular topic, point out an event, or shoot the breeze. I'm a little bit of an essayist at times, so I'll just speak what's on my mind, and I might tell a story or two. Or, I might spew out an opinion or three. There will be some serious moments, some tender, some poignant, but there will also be those moments that you'll just bust out laughing. But, hopefully, everything will be in good fun here. And, of course, there's a place below for your comments and thoughts as we go along here. So feel free to join me for the ride -- I sure as heck hope I'm doing this right and not making any mistakes.

Thanks for taking your time in reading Case's Column. Hopefully, you'll enjoy being entertained by it as much as I've enjoyed putting these writings together. And thanks for the time you spend in City-Data.com, where it's great to be alive!

Regards,

Pictures Of A Road Trip Are All In My Mind

Posted 10-09-2010 at 08:48 AM by case44

Someone told me, once upon a time, that I had a photographic memory. I've got one, alright. The fact that I have an ability to picture things as I've seen them has been a staple of the many pockets of my memory bank down through the years.

And that scenario will come into play once again when I take to the road in a few short days. This will be in the form of a vacation and not some short road trip. It's amazing what I think about, even in fleeting moments, when I do things like road trips, however long or short they may be. What song did I listen to on the radio while I was driving along, say, Research Expressway in Austin, Texas, near the Spicewood Springs interchange on a Saturday morning? Or, perhaps, Seawall Boulevard in Galveston on a vacation last year? Or driving over a short bridge on top of a creek in Salado, Texas? It's like, where was I when this happened? That's the luxury you have when a photographic memory is in your possession. My belief (and you may disagree if you will) is that a memory should be photographic. I don't honestly know what it's like for a memory not to be. Sometimes, when I listen to streamlining on my computer, I occasionally conjure up images of where I would be if this song were playing.

Road trip memories don't stop with just things on a radio station. These things extend to food or a place to stop, stretch, breathe, and squeeze those buns. Road trips are meant for memories. Who can forget that great hamburger or some barbecue served on butcher paper? Who could possibly forget a short drive over the Pedernales River near Johnson City, Texas, on a crisp, clear afternoon? Little things. Pockets of memory filled with one special item or scene. They always come back when you think of certain other things.

My, I can't wait until my next road trip. What can I fill my brain with this time?
