There's more to life than 'rap music'...

I currently live in the SE...I'm from the NW...
So I'm about as far away geographically as you can get from the place you were raised...
I come from a place where there was a lot of farmland and canyons..I should of never left...your perspect on life, and self, and scale, is so different in that enviornment, than where I live now...

...

....I now live in a urban or southern urban enviornment...and I live in what I call a 'working class hood'...

Meaning most people work, but wages are low...many homes are owned, but many are rented out...(and the rental homes are usually where the issues occur)...

But anyhow...it kinda depresses me that 99% of the young black males with their car stereos on are blasting some kind of rap...usually a bland tasteless, profanity filled southern rap...

Where I grew up, the few blacks or minorities there were, were into a variety of music...from rock, metal, old soul, jazz, the blues disco, punk, marching band music, show tunes, fusion jazz even elevator music...point being...people were induvisuals..not clones!!....

But it wasn't just 100% rap they, we, listened too...

I find that very culturaly mute...to close yourself off to all and any other forms of music except rap...

Rap, particularly this southern rap, just gives you one perspective on life...and if that's all one listens to, then their ability to reason or relate to things other than 'rap rhetoric' will be very limiting...

Music, to me, is to be listened to like you would eat a meal...you need a balanced diet...and with music, you need a balanced selection...

The same with people who only listen to 'pop country'...over and over and over again...yuk...

As a person growing up as a ethnic minority, I had to learn early on how to adopt to the many different peoples around me...you had to...

As a result, I was invited into many different worlds...

Blacks in the South really aren't minorities...cause in the South, whole cities and counties are like segregated...in that people live around other people of similuar colors or culture...so they never really learn to step outside of their comfort zone...

Where I'm from (Washingtons State)...there wasn't enough blacks to form a seperate community...so you had to blend in or be absorbed into the community you lived in...

And so it forced you to grow...
White kids, that I grew up with, would always invite us over for sleep overs, and vice versa....it was normal...at least where I lived...

But stuff like that is unheard of down here...

Blacks stick with blacks, whites stick with whites, mexicans stick with mexicans and so on...
And boy do I find that so so stuffy, and limiting...

In that it really stunts your growth...and or ability to see other peoples plight or struggles or similarities...

I suppose the next big thing will be spanish...or learning it...cause like in Orlando, Miami...Tampa...the Carolinas...it's coming...

Latino immigrants, some of which are second generation now, are starting to make a presence in the south east, with all it's agricultural farms...dairy farms...ect ect..

We live in an ever shifting world...the more you know...the better you'll be able to adapt to change...

Cause remember this...the world stands still for no one...

for more of my personal thoughts

    Continued from above...

Another thing I can't stand, is when I'm walking into a business of some sort, and there's a car parked outside with someone blarreing Rap music!!

I feel it so deminishes who or what it is I'm trying to be at that moment...
It like takes away all my accomplishments as an induvisual, and publically reduces me to nothing more than some rap listening to 'goon' from the hood....

The person in the car blarring the rap music, their not trying to get a job, or make an impression on anyone, their just parked their waiting for whatever reason...and are so clueless to how the world works...

Just once, just once, I wish someone from the hood could pull up and I could hear a more sophisticated sound coming from the speakers...like Sade or something...

The more I'm around this community (SE hoods), the less intelligent they seem to me...when I didn't live around them, I always gave them the benefit of the doubt...but now that I'm forced to live amongst them...I just wonder sometimes...

A true inncedent that occured tonight...

I was at a Subway sandwich shop...

When I walked in, there was two younger white males in line...young and slim...probablly between 17-21...just my guess...

They were in the 'hood' though, at a sub-way sandwich shop...just waiting in line with myself and another fella...

Then walks in these two huge large Afro-American guys...they two were young...probablly between 18-21...
But by their behavior, they seemed more like 12-16...

Anyways...they started the typical stereotypical behavior...laughing loud, chuckling, just acting totally immature and socially backwards in a public setting...

I don't know if they were laughing at me, or the two white guys, or who knows what...all I know is they were acting immature and inappropriate.

Anyways...the two white guys were joined by a female companion of one of there's...they hugged and kiss...
Then the two heavy set black males broke out in more loud laughter...

It grossed me out how they were behaving...

Turns out the two white guys didn't have enough to cover their meal...his card didn't go through or something...and so they walked out in disgrace with their girlfriend...

Well, me being me, and knowing plenty about being humiliated in public...decided to jump into the situation...

By this time the two immature acting b-guys had lowered their tone...as I asked the cashier 'how much did they owe?'
It was around $13.00...so I told him I'll get it for them.

Went outside before they left and said Hey, just wait there...I got this for you...

Anyways...I finally paid for it, and gave them their original order...they offered me something in return...and I just said Nah, and walked on to my vehicle...

Instead of getting myself a sandwich, I ended up buying for them, 3 complete strangers....

My point is I guess, two different sets of youngsters, with different types of behavior and mannerisms...

Color had nothing to do with it, if you think it did, than your mistaken...rather 'culture' did.
And loud profanity filled rap music, and a certain mentality that goes with it, has become a certain 'sub-culture' within it'self...
And I could see some of that culture displayed in those two loud young males who made fools of themselves in that Subway shop...

When faced with people or cultures different than themselves, (whether myself or the 3 young white youth), instead of realizing the whole world is not reflective of the hood, they instead do what I see so many youngsters do around here, and that is break out in a loud, nervious, condescending hyena type laughter...

I didn't want those other young people to go away with such a primitave view of people in this area, so I stepped in to help erase the bad effect, of both the guys laughing and not having funds for their order...

You never know how that could touch them in the future and help them to not make broad generalizations about others based on one incedent...

Anyways, i went home without a meal...it didn't matter...that moment will last forever in thier minds and mine, the meal would have been gone in moments...

(And by the way, I've stepped in and paid for various people, male, female, black, white, who for whatever reason fall short at the check out counter...I know how embarracing it can be when you slide your debt card, and it gets denied...so I try to step in and help when and where I can...cause if things don't change soon for me, I'll be the one without funds to by a bag of groceries)

    Related to above post...

Today, I went back to that sub sandwich shop...and the clerk remembered the kindness I showed to those 3 young custimors...and so he gave me a discount on my order today...

Even though I'm not a cop, he gave me the 'cop' discount...cause he was so impressed with the kindness I showed on Saturday night towards 3 complete strangers by paying for their meal...

And I'de do it again if the situation were the same...

Well as the wheather warms up down here in the SE...your starting to hear more of the loud rap music blaring from car stereos, as people try to out rap each other...

And feel you want to listen to it too...
And they think that you think their cool, cause they're blaring the latest jibberish...

And then when you walk past them, sometimes you move with the rythmn of the beat unintentionally, and you feel like your in a rap video or something...

It's not that I don't like rap music, or certain select branches of it, it's the sheer volume or number of people that listen to it down here...and absolutly nothing else...24/7 rap...like a god or something...

And if your listening to it 24/7 than you can't help but embrace the value system being spurted off by the artist...and I see the negative effects of these attitudes everyday around here...in the males and females...

    And it's not good...

Anyways..gotta run...some lady just walked past me dragging here feet and sandals, to lazy to pick her feet up...
