Welcome To Case's Column

Let me say a big welcome to all of you for joining me here. I'm going to call these blog meetings Case's Column. I wanted to use "Corner", but that was already taken. Since 2008, it's been a real privilege to come on here and share some of my life with you, and it's a big world where we live.

In these blogs, I'll just speak whatever is on my mind, but we will be playing within the rules here. I may pick a particular topic, point out an event, or shoot the breeze. I'm a little bit of an essayist at times, so I'll just speak what's on my mind, and I might tell a story or two. Or, I might spew out an opinion or three. There will be some serious moments, some tender, some poignant, but there will also be those moments that you'll just bust out laughing. But, hopefully, everything will be in good fun here. And, of course, there's a place below for your comments and thoughts as we go along here. So feel free to join me for the ride -- I sure as heck hope I'm doing this right and not making any mistakes.

Thanks for taking your time in reading Case's Column. Hopefully, you'll enjoy being entertained by it as much as I've enjoyed putting these writings together. And thanks for the time you spend in City-Data.com, where it's great to be alive!

Regards,

Fortune Cookie: What's In It For Me?

It's one thing to go out to a Chinese restaurant and go through the buffet line and get about 25 things to eat and savor. It's another when the waiter or waitress drops off a little item wrapped in a small transparent wrapper. What is it about that little item?

Ah, yes. The fortune cookie. Open up said wrapping and break the vanilla-tasting bit of hardness and see what's inside. I'll eat the cookie momentarily, but I'm dying to see what the little piece of paper with the hidden message says. And how did they get that message into that hard cookie? Oh, we can answer that later. My last one read like this: "An unexpected payment is coming your way!" Wow. Sounds good, doesn't it? An unexpected check, perhaps? Maybe it's Publishers Clearing House. No, it actually isn't. I did, however, sell my drum set to a used instrument store recently, but the check I got back was expected. And my paycheck at work was on time and it was the amount I expected.

Hmmmmmm, this isn't working.

Yes, to answer your subtle questions, I did eat the cookie, but that's not important now. That little message could have had something else written on it. Imagine Confucius rolling over in his grave.

Some possibilities:

"You will prosper as never before!"

"Your life will see a paved golden road in front of you!"

"You will meet and marry a good-looking woman before Hell freezes over!"

"A genie will pour oil all over your head and you will suddenly know everything!"

"A meteor shower will decorate your apartment property with silver and gold!"

"You will witness a one hundred dollar bill falling from a tree!"

Okay, I do realize all that is over the top, but I would not want to be in Charlie Brown's shoes should he open up a fortune cookie.

"Forget it, kid!"

I should also mention that they do put lottery numbers on the back of the fortune message in case the main message doesn't bear fruit. And, of course, neither of them do. (~Sigh~) Well, we can always dream, can't we? It's not the end of the world if the message doesn't come true. Things are bad enough everywhere else. Wall Street's still trying to rebound. People are still looking for a good job out there. There's more than our lion's share of bad news on this place called Earth that the events in a Chinese restaurant seem trivial and delusional. You know, my life is still good after all. It's just a fortune cookie.

Yes, just a fortune cookie which is just icing on the cake. Chinese food, yum! My husband and I will sometimes take his kids to a local Chinese buffet. It's across the highway from Six Flags actually, but I can never remember the name of it. Grand Buffet, maybe. Anyway, there's a new Chinese place opening up nearby and we're going to have to try that one!
