Thursday I woke up sick. I didn't know at the time I was sick, as I pushed and pushed my body through the early morning routine... shower, coffee, walk to the office. I thought I was just tired. I got to my desk at 8:30, by 9:30 I was so overwhelmed with exhaustion (the cup of tea apparently did not help) that I put my head down on my cold lacquered desk and closed my eyes under the bright fluorescent lights. I woke up at 10:00ish feeling refreshed and surprised that I actually had slept for a while and so deeply my sweater nubs embedded into the side of my face. Thinking this was it, I was shocked when at around 10:05 I was so tired that I put my head back onto my desk and slept until 10:26. This is when I should have realized I was sick... my adviser canceled our 12:00 meeting, and I decided that I should go home and sleep since I clearly needed it. I got home slept for about 3 hours, returned to school to sign up for help room hours (and get everyone else sick) and then returned home, sleeping until 7pm. Luckily for me my boyfriend made chicken noodle soup when he got home and I began the recovery process.
Friday, though feeling better, I was still very much out of it and exhausted. I did push through my meeting with my adviser at 11:00 - which OH MY GOODNESS, thank god I did! I messed up something in the work I was showing him, but the example that I gave him (because I mis-interpreted an idea that he had in a previous meeting) caused us to brainstorm on another example that actually might be the solution to the second third of my dissertation! We have two spaces that do indeed require our method over the previously available methods to determine that they are different. All that is left to do is to work out the details..... it always seems like nothing when you look at the statement - "work out the details." But, anyone who has taking a math class where the book says "the details are left to the reader" and have actually attempted to work them out knows that there is nothing trivial about working out details. Still, I feel one step closer and am giddy at that prospect.
I still feel a little under the weather today, but that didn't stop me from waking up at 9:30am, cleaning out some of the garage - a project that has been weighing on me, taking my dog for a walk, doing dishes, doing a crossword, showering, and sitting down to write this. It always amazes me how a couple of days of rest can really push me into gear and turn me into a multi-tasking wonder woman. Apparently, I really am one of those people who desperately need their weekends.
