Welcome To Case's Column

Let me say a big welcome to all of you for joining me here. I'm going to call these blog meetings Case's Column. I wanted to use "Corner", but that was already taken. Since 2008, it's been a real privilege to come on here and share some of my life with you, and it's a big world where we live.

In these blogs, I'll just speak whatever is on my mind, but we will be playing within the rules here. I may pick a particular topic, point out an event, or shoot the breeze. I'm a little bit of an essayist at times, so I'll just speak what's on my mind, and I might tell a story or two. Or, I might spew out an opinion or three. There will be some serious moments, some tender, some poignant, but there will also be those moments that you'll just bust out laughing. But, hopefully, everything will be in good fun here. And, of course, there's a place below for your comments and thoughts as we go along here. So feel free to join me for the ride -- I sure as heck hope I'm doing this right and not making any mistakes.

Thanks for taking your time in reading Case's Column. Hopefully, you'll enjoy being entertained by it as much as I've enjoyed putting these writings together. And thanks for the time you spend in City-Data.com, where it's great to be alive!

Regards,

The Friday Night Lights Are Shining Once Again

Posted 08-27-2010 at 06:12 AM by case44

Never mind that my state just had a strong cold front move through a couple of days ago. There happens to be something more important that is already taking place. High school football is once again in full swing in the state of Texas and across the country.

My area has already had a few games played, so all the pigskin gurus are ready for action. The plans on my calendar already include games on a few Thursdays and eight of the next eleven Fridays. Since I don't have that dreadful work schedule I had at this time last year, I can easily accommodate the things going on this season. Most of the games I plan to attend will be in Frisco, Texas, just a few miles from the apartment. It's an up-and-coming school district that has opened its sixth high school, and the fifth in the last eight years, back on August 23. Their new team plays tonight (August 27), so I will be in the stands for that. The school district contains Frisco, Centennial, Wakeland, Heritage, Liberty, and Lone Star (the aforementioned new school) on the high school scene. My main team will be the Wakeland Wolverines, as it has the city's number one band program and a football team that should be in contention this year. But, even so, it won't stop me from attending other schools' games, as I'm very interested to see how this district and its traditions will take shape.

The Texas tradition lives on, and I get to experience it in one of America's greatest suburbs. Life is fun, isn't it? We shall find out whether Wakeland will be a playoff team (they got shafted last year on a technicality) or if we'll have some surprises this season. Time will tell as my home area gears up for next February's Super Bowl NFL extravaganza in nearby Arlington, and that will be covered in a future blog.

First things first, though. And it all begins on a warm Friday night in August.

Your hometown is Arlington?? I didn't know that. We live 10 minutes away from the new stadium. We will be holed up at the house during the SB. I'm not getting anywhere near there during that time!

To clarify, I spent my youth in Grand Prairie, but attended Arlington schools. Nowadays, I'm 20 miles away in the northern suburbs. I think when I said "nearby", you kind of gotten thrown off a bit.

I'm keeping my fanny north of the big airport unless I move away from D/FW altogether. My next place of residence will be Frisco if I play my cards right. But, as I said, first things first. I'm watching football and the halftime show tonight.
