Life Keeps Going

Posted 08-18-2010 at 06:02 PM by EmmyNoether

So, despite not having surgery at the crack of dawn Tuesday morning, I did wake up at about 4am feeling like I had broken a fever. My temp was 99.1. I decided that I was upset at the fact that I didn't get my days to lay in bed and be pampered, so I would try to take a couple days off. Not feeling 100%, I made up the excuse of illness to explain to my adviser why my surgery hadn't happened and why I still couldn't meet with him. I set aside time to take care of myself. Wouldn't you know this was the day my boyfriend decided to start the all important job search and instead of laying in bed watching tv or reading, I sat beside him while he emailed people and rewrote cover letters.

As much as I wanted to take a day off, it was actually a blessing in disguise. While he worked on his applications, I wrote a cover letter - for my very first time. Today I edited it and refreshed my resume. If things go well, I will now have all of my application materials set aside for my own job search to be able to apply as soon as I get the green light from my adviser. Now all I need is that dissertation.....

Tomorrow the work begins again. It's sad, on one hand I desperately need to take a vacation but on the other, two days is all I can spare. The semester starts in a week and a half and I have to write my first week's lectures, plan for the semester and get enough research underway for my cover letter and resumes to make sense. My mom upset me on this front. When I called her to tell her that I wasn't having the surgery all she said was: "Oh, that's great! Will you meet with your adviser then?" I know that she's a work-a-holic, but it makes me feel guilty for even taking a day or two to rest. I guess that's why even on my days off this week, I still worked on a necessary life item. I just hope that I don't burn out too fast before I have a chance to get somewhere.
