A Walk In The Park

Posted 06-25-2008 at 10:03 PM by mams1559

Last Friday I was feeling very low. Early Saturday morning my wife suggested we take a walk, to try and cheer me up. At the time I really didn't want to, but I reluctantly gave in. So me, the kids and our dog piled in the car and we headed downtown. It's only a short drive and we arrived and parked the car (free parking on the weekends )

Anyway, we walked and talked and the kids and dog were running on ahead. My wife had brought the camera and I decided to take some pictures to distract my mind from my troubles. So we walked and talked and I snapped pics of my favorite downtown landmarks and buildings. Some have been around for over 100 years.

We wound up in our central park -- the size of one city block -- to take a break and relax. At the time I wasn't recognizing any of the beauty or pleasantness of my surroundings. I, after all, was concentrating on being negative and depressed. So I clicked a few more pics.

Then we made our way back to the car, still taking a pic here and there. Then we decided to go home to get some lunch because I wasn't enjoying much of anything and the wife was getting a bit annoyed with me. That's when the wife read my blog and .. well, yenz know.

Anyway, what I'm trying to get at is I hadn't looked at the pics I took until after that weekend... really just yesterday. And it strikes me how lovely that morning was and I just couldn't see it at the time. The sky was so blue and it was so warm. Thinking back on it, it could have been a wonderful morning, but I made it just so-so.

I think we all tend to do that at times ... miss the forest for the trees or miss the beauty because of pain. However, once the pain is gone, our outlook on things is fresh and new. Fortunately, with the pics, I can look back on that day and see it clearer than when I actually was there. The next time I take a walk in the park, I'll be sure to enjoy it more and appreciate God's creation, man's ingenuity and the things I have been blessed with in this life that are more important than the material things.

If you'd like, the pics are in an album on my profile page. I'll be adding more as time permits. Enjoy life! Blessings ~~~

Oh, mams, isn't this so true. Your post made me think of the times that I have something eating away at me (maybe hubby said something I disagreed with, whatever). There have been times that I have just taken a moment in prayer and asked God to help me get past it. I know that if I allow myself, I can turn it into something long and dreadful. I am ashamed to say that I am always so surprised at how quickly my mood can change (with God's grace, obviously) and things can start to look better.

    Blessings to you, my friend.

That's such a good illustration. We spend waay too much of our life not enjoying the moment because we're in the "mulligrubs" about something...and often it's the moment that's important rather than what we're "stewing" over.

I also enjoyed looking at the pics! I imagine the weather was pretty (temp wise) that day too!

A few months ago I was at the park taking pictures of birds and as I was walking (kind of fast) a bird to my right flew off, if I had been walking slower I could have got a picture of it. It made me think, what have I missed my life because I have rushing through it to get from point A to point B and not enjoying the journey.
