There's a Job Offer in My Cookie

Posted 10-31-2008 at 01:02 PM by jjbradleynyc

What do you do when you have to interview, but don't want the job you are interviewing for? This is the conundrum I--as well as many of you--am faced with during this dreary economy.
I had an interview over the phone during my lunch time today, and it was torture to get through. Absolute torture. I understand it is a process by which all working people must pass through--as it does separate the "yes" pile from the "no way" pile. But, to go through a 30-minute series of *annoying* questions, aimed at asking you "why you want this job" and "let's hypothesize and role play in this scenario...blah blah", etc., makes you wonder if you will ever get to the point of not having to interview just to collect a freakin' paycheck!
During my phone interview, I had just bought Chinese food for lunch--not "just" Chinese, but Chinese from Panda Express--which I love. Go ahead and balk. It's some delicious eating. I had just started eating--and my interviewer had not phoned. It was 1:08, and he/she was to call at 1pm. I had just taken a huge bite of sweet and sour chicken when, *of course*, the phone rang. The chewing began to go quicker and quicker while the phone rang, and on the fifth ring, I pick up. I knew the interview was heading downhill from that moment on. And oh boy, did it ever.
I found myself daydreaming somewhat, during the interview. Wondering why I had to go through this series of very similar questions for the 30th (or what seems like) time. Once it was over, I almost threw the phone across the room. But to save my sanity, I gobbled up the Panda lunch, and got ready to hurry back to work. But, alas, there sat the fortune cookie...what a boring cookie. Yet, intricately shaped, nicely wrapped, and begging to be eaten. I unwrapped the crinkly paper, crunched open the cookie while ramming it into my mouth. As my mouth became dry from the crunch, a faint smile began as I read the fortune. "You will soon see unlimited opportunities laid before you." Whoa, that was all I needed to read.
Forget the bad interview. My future is in that cookie!
