Welcome To Case's Column

Let me say a big welcome to all of you for joining me here. I'm going to call these blog meetings Case's Column. I wanted to use "Corner", but that was already taken. Since 2008, it's been a real privilege to come on here and share some of my life with you, and it's a big world where we live.

In these blogs, I'll just speak whatever is on my mind, but we will be playing within the rules here. I may pick a particular topic, point out an event, or shoot the breeze. I'm a little bit of an essayist at times, so I'll just speak what's on my mind, and I might tell a story or two. Or, I might spew out an opinion or three. There will be some serious moments, some tender, some poignant, but there will also be those moments that you'll just bust out laughing. But, hopefully, everything will be in good fun here. And, of course, there's a place below for your comments and thoughts as we go along here. So feel free to join me for the ride -- I sure as heck hope I'm doing this right and not making any mistakes.

Thanks for taking your time in reading Case's Column. Hopefully, you'll enjoy being entertained by it as much as I've enjoyed putting these writings together. And thanks for the time you spend in City-Data.com, where it's great to be alive!

Regards,

I'm Serious - I Could Have Sworn I SMELLED That Rain

Vacations offer so many different things for lots of folks. You can put a list together and name anything. Memories, mishaps, portraits, senses, experiences, and timing. That sounds like a list of things in life.

And with all that in mind, imagine the scene on the tail end of my drive home back to Dallas from Lubbock on Friday, 23 July. I was entering into Decatur, Texas to stop for some catfish at a place called Catfish O'Harlies. Before making the stop, there were a few rain clouds on the horizon, with some of them containing heavy rain. Although I would run into a little bit of rain showers, I swear, as I was about to drive into those shower paths, I could literally smell the rain through my air-conditioner in my Toyota. I can imagine smelling said weather changes outside, but inside the car?? Don't get me wrong, folks. Rain does smell good in the spring and summer months after a long sun spell. My week in Lubbock was all sunshine and a few clouds. This episode could not have been written any better to finish off road trip. The smell of rain..........before the smell of fried catfish, fries, and hush puppies.

But let's think about this for a second, gang. Rain. Think about how it smells when it first starts falling. Not a heavy rain, but just a few large trickles. You've got little sunshine and some Big Bubba dark clouds hovering over you. When you're outdoors, it's absolute heaven, especially when you decide to welcome it. But it just seems strange to have that smell inside my automobile, and I may recall something like that happening before, but strangely enough, I don't really remember.

Oh, no matter, though. I wouldn't complain about precipitation following days of sunshine. Since the weather cooperated on my road trip across the Texas plains and prairies, this is just another great subject for a blog page. And another chapter of this thing called life.

Rain is always a good thing and the aroma is never bad. Glad the weather cooperated for you.

Oh, gosh, how many times have I driven past that Catfish O'Harlies, always wanting to go in, but it was never the right time of day. In other words, it was never at mealtime. One of these days....

I remember once driving between Ballinger and Sweetwater one fall day. I think it was warm and humid up until then, but a deluge opened up. Suddenly it was cool. The aroma reminded me of how good the countryside can smell in a storm after a dry period--you don't have as much car residue to smell like you do in urban areas.

The next day in Lubbock the weather was absolutely perfect, imo. The wind was blowing from the west at about 7-8 mph, and the humidity was in the single digits (may be too dry for some, but definitely not me). It was about 72 degrees at the 6 PM kickoff with a clear sky. (Unfortunately Tech lost that game handily, but that's something else.) Fall fronts are very nice in Texas, except for the severe ones that flare up occasionally.

Anyway, glad you got home safely.
