Everything in Check

Posted 07-15-2010 at 09:00 PM by EmmyNoether

I meant to write last night and then again today, but as I've mentioned my home internet has been on the fritz. It's just now that I've been able to get connected to the world wide web. After working quite hard yesterday, I did get enough done to have a really good conversation with my adviser. It feels so good when I'm the one teaching him, and any questions that I do have are discussed and thought through together. I'm really feeling that he is respecting me and how much I really pour myself into my work with him. Today, we had another one of our turning points.

Last semester he hired a former student of a colleague as his post-doc. This person, we shall call him Haggar, is a selfish, entitled, eastern European who truly believes that he is beyond brilliant and walks on water. My adviser has, in the past, noticed my disposition change and while I've never said anything negative, he's picked up that I prefer not to be around Haggar. Today, Haggar walked up to our table where we were meeting, holding his phone up for display and in one of our mid-sentences said: "It is exactly 2:30." Although he has never done this exact thing in the past, this is actually typical behavior for him. I was so happy and proud when my adviser said: "And we are exactly not finished. Go the bathroom and we might be done by then." I was so happy that he actually stood up for me!

Today was good in general. I finally decided that the lecture I gave for this class that I taught in 2009 was completely appropriate for my summer 2010 session. I didn't even copy it by hand, I photocopied it. I thought this would be horrible, but I know what I want to say, write, etc, and I need to take time for me. I do feel bad about not preparing as if it was my first class, but after 4 years of teaching 25 tutoring students, I'm finally feeling like I'm coming into my own. That's the best part of, I guess, being seasoned... you can make those adjustment calls, and you can finally have enough confidence that you are right in your own assessment.
