On Becoming More Self-Sustaining

Growing up in Northern Vermont, we always had a huge garden and my Mom canned and froze everything. I don't remember having an Oreo cookie at home, but did feast on homemade applesauce ginger cookies, fresh strawberry shortcake, homemade oatmeal bread (my personal fave) and many other items harvested from our garden.
These days, I've given up on gardening, but really missed the gardening experience. Last year, we joined Mountainview Farms, a local C.I.S.A. farm as a way to get reconnected to fresh produce. Yesterday, while picking 6 quarts of strawberries, a quart of snow peas and one of snap peas, my years of growing up in my Mom's garden came rushing back to me. As a thunderstorm was rolling its way toward us, I remembered running to the garden to pick before a summer storm, shelling peas on the front porch watching the rain come down.
Many communities offer farmer's markets, which are great, but the ability to stand in a field, looking up at Mt. Tom, picking a bouquet of snapdragons and zinneas just can't be beat.

Your experience of picking fresh veggies and fruits is so what I want. I grew up in a city that consisted of picking your "fresh" fruits & veggies at the local supermarkets. I was telling my co worker last week what I want in life is to be out in a house living by the lake with the next house being like 10 mins away and picking my food from the backyard.
Any recipes available on the strawberry shortcake and oatmeal bread? Sounds delicious.Posted 06-25-2008 at 10:38 AM by Acevaz -
That makes me hungry... Hope you make something tasty with all those strawberries.

I am retiring soon to a full time garden like I once had. Both my grandfathers were vegetable farmers. I'm returning to it so that we will once again be self sufficient. My wife cans and freezes everything. Now we will even explore the world of dehydration. Commercially frozen and home frozen are light years apart IMHO. A good blog.

Gardening is wonderful--and so is self-sustenance! Have any of you heard of DigitallyPrepared.com? It serves as a distributor of media preparing people to be self-preserving through natural means. The videos have been great!
