Internet Jones Digs Up Remains of Lost Thread on City-Data Forum

Posted 06-13-2010 at 05:53 PM by GCSTroop

Internet Jones, one of the world's most renowned internet archaeologists, was responsible Sunday morning for digging up a thread which died early on in the City-Data Empire's rise to power. Dating back to nearly four years ago, it is one of the oldest threads to have resurfaced at this time.

Titled, "What should the Bush Administration do about 'No Child Left Behind?'" the thread was thought to have been lost to history forever after the inauguration of President Obama nearly a year and a half ago. The inauguration of President Obama was subsequently thought to eliminate most, if not all threads asking what the Bush Administration should do about a certain policy. Even stranger, the thread title was written in a futuristic tense making the excavation of such an old and lamentable thread thought nearly impossible.

Some forum members were shocked at the discovery. "I knew people asked these questions back then," one anonymous member stated, "but it's pretty surprising to think that so much of the ancestry of this site could be sitting right in front of my face without me even knowing about it!" Common sense and the little clock at the side of the thread indicating it's an ancient post be damned, Internet Jones thought it was an absolutely important topic.

"When I'm up late at night I like to perform random Google searches," Jones stated. "Every once in a while, I'll type in something that everyone wants to read a one-line response to years after the last comment was made. For example, sometimes I'll type in 'Does God Exist' and I'll click on the first thing that comes up and I'll respond to it. I usually don't pay attention to the last time the thread was paid any mind at all and then I drop the bombshell with my introductory comment. In the case of the George Bush and No Child Left Behind thread, I simply said 'Obama sucks!!'"

Perhaps the most incredible thing about the resurrection of such ancient threads is that people actively respond to them as though the OP is still around or actively seeking and pursuing an answer. "I don't mean to do it," Jones stated, "but it seems like my comments always trigger a re-ignition of the arguments hashed out so many years ago. It's an amazing twist of the human condition to see them bickering and arguing over something that happened so long ago."

Some people are proud there are those like Internet Jones around to excavate threads that have been lost to history. "Some of these threads are over 70 pages in length but that doesn't mean there's a good answer to the OP's question lying around just yet," one member stated. "It's very possible that someone like Internet Jones could come along and after so many years, perhaps four or five even, answer that very question."

Critics often supplement their argument with the notion that City-Data Forum is often seen primarily as a relocation site for people moving or searching for a new home. "Threads that are three and four years old probably aren't pertinent any longer," GCSTroop is quoted as saying. "If I was looking for a home in Arizona four years ago, the chances of me still looking for a home in Arizona are probably slim to none. I've probably either found a place in Arizona or I've already bought the home, had time to foreclose on it, and had it taken from the bank. I've probably even had time to blame it on illegal aliens too."

The criticisms go for threads in the other forums too - not just the ones pertaining to cities and states. "Is it really necessary to keep a thread open asking what the Bush Administration is going to do pertaining to a certain legislation?" Another member asked. "After all, no good can come of any reply and is more than likely going to pave the way for infractions and deleted entries anyway."

It's probably most agreeable that like any thread, it should be available to see should someone find it interesting while digging through the historical remnants and archives of the internet. Like a museum, many of these threads would do good to be viewed through bulletproof glass and a "look but not touch atmosphere."

Meanwhile, Indiana Jones is being seen as somewhat of a hero for excavating a thread nearly twice the age of many aged Cheddars. "I'm going to keep on digging so that everyone in the future can remember threads written in the past directed towards events that will happen in a finite amount of time. It's the culture of a learning atmosphere."
