Back - Working to be Better

Posted 06-10-2010 at 07:58 AM by EmmyNoether

Yes, I recognize that I have been a bit neglectful of my posting of late. I am so grateful that it is because of good news. Tuesday my mom and I went to see the surgeon about her wound. I had planned to return home that evening, but was very worried to do so. On one hand, I needed to get back to my own life and my research, on the other hand, I didn't want doing so to affect her recovery. We were both hoping that the doctors would say that the wound needed to be dry-packed only once a day, but instead they looked at it and said, "no more." It was healing so well, that she doesn't need anyone to root around, shoving gauze into it any more! I was so relieved that I could return home without worrying too much about her.

I managed to catch the last flight home which put me back around 11:00. Being exhausted from not sleeping too much, having a long day, the release of worrying, caused me to reunite with my boyfriend briefly be in bed earlier than I had intended.

Yesterday, I got up early and went into the office. Just like most times when you are away, it took me and hour and 15 minutes to set up, organize and respond to people! I am always impressed by things like that. It isn't like I was gone that long, or was incommunicado, so I cannot imagine why it should have taken me and hour and 15 minutes! After taking care of the nonsense-business, I worked very hard and got a lot accomplished on my research. It was so nice to be at my own desk instead of a dining room table, and un-bothered enough to get lost in my work without having to get up and get things or answer questions or have little short conversations.

There was good news and bad news yesterday. Good news: I found out that I'm in line to teach. Okay, I'm not fond of teaching, I don't like it, but at least I have some method of funding. This is a good thing. Even though the national average is 5.5 years to get a math phd, our department/school won't guarantee funding for a 6th year. It is certainly a personal point of contention, but at least I'm somewhat supported next semester. Bad news: Just when I return, my advisor is leaving for London for a week or so.... figure that.

After a nice long day, I didn't work out (I know, shame), so that I could enjoy a dinner out (at least I ate salad) with the boyfriend to actually catch up on our lives. We ended up spending the whole night in one of our epically-long conversations. I'll admit that after talking for so long, I didn't have it in me to post to the blog - my apologies. Now that I'm back, I'm more on a routine/schedule and I will be much more diligent about this along with everything else in my life.
