Bug Hunt

Posted 05-31-2010 at 02:50 PM by razorbladesmiley

Not really a bug "hunt" cuz I know where they are in the yard. Currently before blogging (I'm taking a break), I'm digging a hole in this hard, rocky ground; back-breaking work. One of our better neighbors, Sarah, came over to drop off dishes, saw me digging with a pick axe, quipped, "What are you doing now, hiding bodies?" Instantly I thought of Roman persecutions of early Christians being devoured by lions and instead of saying something retarded, I ignored the dizzy twit as she strode up to the house to talk to my girlfriend.

So here I am, digging a hole on Memorial Day in the hot Arizona sun cuz the Girlfriend wants to plant a basil bush. Early this morning, she sprayed Neem, on the poplar tree but with little success cuz not all the bugs were gone. She's going to use peppermint oil mixed in with the Neem. She and Sarah were walking out in the front of the house, checking out our garden. I heard them talking about the ant hill saying one of the most potent ways to get rid of the entire colony is to use raw cinnamon or powdered cinnamon which the workers will take down to the queen and others in the colony and wipe them all out.

I've heard that boric acid gets rid of bugs too. Only insects that we really worry about here are black widows, scorpions and brown recluse spiders. Everywhere I've worked in AZ, I've been told to squish black widows and brown recluses on sight. For these three, we have cats to take care of them. Yes, cats eat insects too. I didn't know this til I had a praying mantis for a pet and I came home to find only wings and a leg in the aquarium. Right next to it, was the Girlfriend's then kitten, Toe. AARGH.

I heard Sarah go on and on about fire ants and how they're this and they're that, and my girlfriend listening intently on what she had to say. There goes my plan of creating a carnivorous ant horde ...
